“Firstly, seatbelt, missy. I’m not driving you anywhere without one.” I giggled, reaching over to pull it across my body, locking it into place.

“Better?”

“Good girl. Okay, so about this address?”

My god, he was right. I told him, and watched his mouth drop open.

“Fucking seriously? That’s right across town!”

I recoiled at the sudden anger from him, so out of character, you know, for the hour or so that I’ve known him.

“I’m sorry. I… you can let me out here.”

I reached for the seatbelt clip, and he put one of those large hands over mine.

“Don’t be silly. I’m more pissed about the fact that you were planning to walk all that way. Are you out of your fucking mind? Your friend went missing, and yet you think that’s safe? Even without this weather?”

Wow. He was pissed, but in a deliciously protective way, that made me incredibly wet all of a sudden. I squeezed my thighs together, hoping he didn’t notice.

“I’m sorry.”

He pulled out of the car park, the sudden burst of speed rocking us both back in our seats.

“What the hell are you apologising for? Trying so hard not to be a burden, that you’d walk right across town, at nearly ten at night?”

I giggled suddenly.

“What about any of that was funny?” He practically snarled, and I felt another wave of that desperate desire for him. This burly beast of a man was monumentally pissed, and it was hot.

“I’m just… I’m used to being made to feel like… uh… never mind.”

He groaned, slowing to a crawl as he came to some temporary traffic lights for roadworks, which weren’t even in progress at this time of night. He looked at me.

“Whoever makes you feel anything other than worth their time, doesn’t deserve a minute of yours.” I shrugged.

“Family stuff. I didn’t mean to bring it up. Thank you for driving me home though. That was kind of you. And probably way out of your way.”

He shot me another fierce look. “That’s fucking irrelevant. If you lived in another damn town, I’d rather drive you there, than let you risk it on your own.”

My god. He’s so… everything. Perfect for me. I’m losing my mind. This is too fast for me to be this hot for him.

Sluts and whores rush in. That’s why you’re doing just that right now.

Dammit!

“Well, I know I’m a dumbass, but I’d hardly try to walk to another town.” I said sharply, drawing another look from him.

“I didn’t mean to imply that you’re stupid. Just that you seem to worry more about being an inconvenience, than your own safety. I don’t like it.”

I chewed the inside of my cheek. “Well, what you like isn’t really my problem.” Where was this coming from? I usually back down from everyone. Every time. I’m in the way? Don’t worry, I’ll move. I’m not moving fast enough, let me run. I just give in. So how was I even disagreeing with him?

He pulled onto a street, and turned the engine off. The sudden silence, when the hot air blowers all cut out, was shocking.

“What… oh? That’s my house.”

He nodded, although he didn’t look at me. I saw him clench his jaw, and knew I’d pissed him off.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be rude. I’m… I’m just tired.”
