“He will be here soon, and this will be over.”

“And then what?” That’s Bain. “You’ll kill your own son for keeping her from you? Mom kept her from you from the moment she was born, and I’ve been keeping her from you for the last several years. It’s taken you this long to find her?”

My heart stalled when I heard her voice, that sweet sound of desperation hidden behind the fiery girl she was when she told me she hated me a month ago. “Where is Sister Mary? I won’t go until you let her go.”

“You think you have a choice? Your mother always did, too.”

My hand squeezed the handle of my knife as I righted my vision. There was nothing more compelling than me hearing someone talk to her in a demeaning way to drag me into that building within seconds, but I’d been taught too many times that you had to scope out the perimeter and see what you were up against. Otherwise, people got hurt, and I wouldn’t risk it. Not with her involved.

Except, when I took my first step to the left to search for exits, I found a blade at my neck with my knife falling to the snow. Fuck.

“And what do we have here?”
