When she heard footsteps head their way, she stiffened. She pulled away, stood, and pressed her finger to her lips before she stepped back into the shadows.
“There you are, darling. I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
Amber watched as Cesar stood and faced her sister and prayed he didn’t say anything about talking to her, or she wouldn’t hear the end of it.
“I wanted to get some fresh air. It’s very beautiful out here.”
Amber watched her sister look around in surprise. Bianca wasn’t much for the outdoors, and she detested getting dirty at all. “Um, well, yes, I suppose it is if you like this kind of stuff.”
“You mean fresh air, flowers, and moonlight?”
Amber pressed her hands against her mouth to keep from laughing again because of the sarcasm in Cesar’s tone that went over her sister’s head.
Bianca shrugged. “Would you like to come back inside?”
“I suppose. I can’t stay too much longer, though.”
“But you haven’t been here that long.”
“I have to get up in the morning to work.”
“On a Saturday?” Bianca asked in shock.
“Well, yes. There are a lot of people who work on the weekends.”
“I hope you don’t have to do that a lot. I like to travel.”
Amber saw him frown.
“What does that have to do with me?” he asked.
“I thought you and me—”
He shook his head, and he snorted. “Hell no.”
“But my mother said—”
“I don’t care what she said.”
Bianca looked totally confused. “But you’re single.”
“Yes.”
“Oh, God, are you gay?”
Cesar laughed. “No.”
“Then I don’t understand.”
“Understand what?” he asked.
“Why you’re not thrilled to be in a relationship with me.”
He sputtered out a laugh. “Maybe because I don’t find you attractive?”
She laughed. “That’s preposterous. Of course, you do. Everyone does.”
“I’d beg to differ. I find I like women who are naturally beautiful and not fake.”
