“Okay, tomorrow morning you’re going to come by, and we’ll put together your business plan, then drive to Atlanta to visit a bank Paul used to bank with. Hopefully, they’ll remember me.” Gillian wheeled herself over to a birdcage in the corner and fed two small birds.

“Lovebirds?” Nick asked. “They’re beautiful.”

“Andy and Annie. They were in the crash with me, but luckily they weren’t hurt.”

His gaze fell on a large panda sitting on the floor next to the cage.

Her gaze followed his. “That was the one thing I kept after I lost my baby. I returned all the other stuff, but I didn’t have it in me to return him. He goes wherever I do. A reminder of the family I never had.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I. But life goes on. New beginnings, new opportunities. Right? Just look at you and Bailey.”

“I hope you’ll come over and give me a tip or two once she gets here.”

“You won’t be able to keep me away.” She smiled. “Do you know what time you’ll get to pick up Bailey from the hospital?”

“All Tanya said was late afternoon. If we leave first thing, we can get there and back in time. I can’t wait to bring her home.”

“Who’s Bailey?” her mom asked from the doorway.

Gillian grimaced. There would be no stopping her mom now until she knew everything. “We’ll explain at the table,” Gillian said and threw Nick an apologetic look as they started toward the kitchen.
