His eyes hold mine for a beat before they drop to my heaving chest.
I fight to keep my breathing steady, but it’s pointless. There’s no way he can’t feel my pulse thundering against his fingers.
“Are you sure about that?” he asks, his eyes crawling back up to meet mine.
“Seb, come on, bro. Boss is waiting.”
“Yes, Sebastian. Time to run along like a good little soldier.”
His jaw tics as he stares at me.
“Seb,” Theo barks, his voice low and terrifying.
His lips twitch and he leans forward until our noses are almost brushing.
“I’ll see you real soon, Hellion.” It’s said as a promise, but I hear the underlying threat in his voice.
“Great. I can hardly wait,” I hiss, sucking in a deep breath when he removes his hand from me.
I stand there watching him as he marches back toward Theo’s Maserati, each of his strides more powerful than the last. The black suit oozes wealth and importance. I want to say it’s a turn off, but honestly, I’d be lying.
I don’t move until he’s back in the car and Theo wheelspins off down the street.
Falling into Calli’s passenger seat, I tip my head back and close my eyes.
“Wow,” Calli breathes. “I’m pretty sure you two haven’t got whatever that is out of your systems yet. That was intense.”
“Can you just take me home, please? I’m sorry, but I just need… I need to be alone.”
“Of course.”
The car rumbles to life beneath me and Calli pulls out.
I have no idea how long I stay there unmoving, but eventually I cave to one of the questions spinning around my head.
“Do they often turn up covered in blood?”
Calli hesitates for a second, and it’s long enough for me to drag my head forward and look at her.
“It’s not that common, no.”
“But it happens?”
“Yeah.”
“Whose was it?”
She shrugs. “I like to assume it’s always someone who deserved it. It’s too much of a head fuck otherwise.”
“I can’t believe they kill people.”
“They might not.”
I raise a brow at her. “You really like to focus on the positives, huh?”
“What else is there? I’d rather they just treat me like an equal and let me know what it is they do, but no, I’m just the stupid little girl who can’t be trusted with the big bad mafia secrets.”
“They don’t think that, Cal,” I assure her.
