"Band practice," she finally says softly, her eyes sparkling as she picks up her head to look into Woods’ eyes, a victorious smile on her face. "I had band practice. I play bass for an all-girl punk band, um, Johnny Baskets."

Woods stops writing. Salinas suppresses laughter.

"Sorry, what?" I ask her. I heard her perfectly, I just want to hear her say the band’s name again.

She meets my gaze. "I’m in an all-girl punk band called Johnny Baskets. I play the bass."

"Right," Woods says. From the corner of my eye, I can see that he’s suppressing a grin. "Do you remember calling us?"

"No," she says. A waiter brings us menus, but Salinas waves him off. We can eat later. This is more important. Trine runs her fingers through her head, hard enough I can hear the sound of her press-on nails digging into her scalp. She’s still looking pointedly at me when she speaks. "I don’t know how I could call you. Your card doesn’t even have a phone number."

"Okay," Woods says, his expression sobering. "What is the last thing you remember, Trine? Before you woke up, after the event?"

"The event?" she laughs, no humor in her voice. "You mean the exorcism?"

"Yes," Salinas answers for Woods. "The exorcism."

She closes her eyes. "I remember my cat jumping on my bed," she says. "I looked at the TV and streaming had stopped because I hadn’t been watching for a while. And then I closed my eyes, I woke up, and you were there."
