Chapter 10

Conleigh

We were sitting in the room with Collins, waiting for her to be taken back so she could have the transplant done.

After this past week, I vowed that I would show Skinner my appreciation.

One fucking way or another.

Hearing my phone ring from my bag, Gage grabbed it, checked the caller ID then handed the phone to me.

Did it bother me he did that? No.

I had nothing to hide.

Seeing that it was the bank manager, I answered, “Hello?”

“Conleigh?”

“Yes. How are you doing, Mr. Shepherd?”

“Well, I’m doing great, and I hope after this phone conversation you will be doing great too.” The breath in my lungs stalled.

“You found it?”

“We did more than find it. Matter of fact, every single cent that was taken from your account has been returned.”

“Not that I’m not grateful, but you told me the likelihood of finding the money was slim to none. So how did y’all find it?”

“Since it’s still part of an ongoing investigation, I’m not privileged to expound on that. But I wanted to be the first to tell you.”

“Thank you so much for this call, Mr. Shepherd.” I hung up the phone and immediately checked my bank balance. And there it was. The money that had disappeared.

“Everything okay?”

I looked up at Gage and then at Collins’s worried frown. “Yes, they found the money and every single cent has been replaced.”

“Does that mean you're quitting Carters?” Gage asked and I couldn’t help the chuckle that came from my mouth.

“You really don’t like me working there. Do you?”

“You weren’t mine when you started working there. So, I didn’t have a say. But now, Baby girl. You are mine. And you have the money back. No need for you to work there anymore.”

“I don’t know. I kind of like…” And what I was going to say was cut off when he growled.

Collins burst out laughing.

Laughing too and deciding I would put him out of his misery, I said, “Yes Gage. I’m quitting Carters.”

“Means you’ll be back home with me?” Collins’s face was alight with excitement.

“That’s exactly what that means, Sunshine. And I can’t wait.”

Then I looked at the expression on Gage’s face. Something told me he had a hand in this. I couldn’t put my finger on it. But I knew.

“You know anything about how the money magically appeared back in my account?” I asked with a raised brow.

“Don’t know what you’re talking about.” He teased.
