Nevaeh was hurt, but how badly?

If he’d hit her again, that ex- boyfriend of hers was going to die. And if he’d done worse… well then, he’d die slowly.

My paws hit the dirt and propelled me through the forest until we hit the outskirts of town, Aaron still at my side.

It was past midnight, so luckily there weren’t many people on the street. We turned the corner and kept running.

We raced down the main road and took the first left and saw her street name!

Thank God, we were almost there.

We found the apartment and pushed into the open door.

I shifted back and so did Aaron, sweat dripping down our burning hot skin.

“Where. Is. She?” Aaron panted, our bodies close to exhaustion already.

“I don’t know. Nevaeh! Nevaeh!”

We ran through the apartment, the smell of fear and bear permeating my senses. “Fuck. He’s a bear. The ex. It must have been him. The one who knocked over her car that night.”

That made sense of course, but I’d hoped the logical conclusion wasn’t the right one.

“Where did he take her, then?” Aaron asked, looking around the tiny apartment.

“I don’t know. But we need to find them.”

A car screeched to a halt out the front of the apartment and I raced to the window.

“It’s Dex and Brad. Let’s go.”

There were two trucks out the front.

They were barely minutes behind us and they weren’t exhausted.

We jogged down the stairs, naked and cooling down.

“Maybe we should have brought the car?” Aaron said, his tone full of sarcasm and humour.

I glanced at him. “Did you think about that when you found out Nevaeh was in trouble?”

Aaron shook his head. “Nope. My wolf took over and I was running beside you before I’d even decided to shift.”

That’s exactly what had happened to me.

“Yeah. I know the feeling. Let’s go.”

We jogged outside and Brad tossed a pair of jeans at each of us.

“Get in, guys. From the smell of this place, we have a bear to hunt.” Dexter gestured to the second car.

We jumped into the vehicle Brad was driving and Dexter jumped out, stripping to his birthday suit.

“I’m gonna shift and follow the scent. You guys drive behind me. Save your strength. There’s going to be a fight at the end of this. I can feel it already.”

Dexter shifted into his massive, silver, Alpha wolf and I drank the bottle of water Brad put in front of me.

He was right. Aaron and I were already tired, and if we were going up against a den of bears, then we were going to need our strength.
