Dexter took off and we drove after him, through the town. He stopped at different spots, sniffing the air, different vehicles. Doors.

I could smell the bear too… then something else.

Someone else.

Someone sweet.

“That’s Nevaeh,” Aaron said through growling teeth.

I nodded, unable to speak.

My wolf was rising to the surface, wanting to run, fight, protect my mate.

Even though she’d left us, run away from her destiny, I wanted the silly human.

The cars pulled over and we jumped out, heading over to Dex, as he shifted and stood in his human form.

“The scent of the bear ends here. Maybe one of you guys can pick up Nevaeh’s scent instead?”

Brad stripped off his jacket and threw it at me. He peeled the rest of his clothing off in record time. “My turn.”

Brad’s human form disappeared and his brown wolf stepped up to us, lifted his head and sniffed the air.

Brad turned and started running.

I hesitated for a moment. My wolf wanted to run with my Omega, lead my pack, as an Alpha should. But it was time to work together.

I jumped back into the car with Aaron and we took off, through the other side of the city and into the woods once again. Heading in the opposite direction of our pack.

We were on our own if things went pear shaped out this way.

We drove deeper into the forest, no longer on actual roads. Feeling our way along dirt paths. Following Brad.

Then a shotgun was fired into the quiet of the night and Aaron slammed on the brakes.

Brad fell to the ground.

“Brad! No!”

I jumped up and shifted, racing straight to Brad, grabbing him by the scruff of the neck and pulling him behind the cars.

The gun boomed again somewhere over my head and I kept dragging, getting my pack mate to safety.

I shifted back once I was safe, and Dexter came over to check him out.

“He needs to get to the hospital. Now.”

Brad wasn’t shifting back, which was a bad sign. He had a gunshot wound in his hindquarters and I suspected he’d require surgery.

Jay, Dexter’s Omega stepped up. “I’ll take him and will call Claire on the way. Get him into the car.”

Dexter nodded. “Yes. Perfect plan. We’ll stay and help you guys.”

We lifted my Omega into one of the cars and Jay took off.

“God, I hope he’s okay.”

A gunshot blasted next to the remaining car and we jumped behind it.
