He flashed me a sexy grin. “Maybe I just want to see your stuff hanging across from mine.”
I liked his answer way too much. To the point that it tempted me to drop the clothes in my hand and climb him like a monkey. I seriously considered that option for a moment before deciding that I preferred to wait for him to make the first move toward sex because I was enjoying the whole getting-to-know-you thing we had going on, as unique as it was, considering the circumstances. “Then you’d better get out of here, or else I’ll never get this done. You’re too much of a distraction.”
“That’s another thing we have in common since you’re so fucking distracting that I basically stumbled through the start of my interview with Morgan on the red carpet.”
“Only basically?” I winked at him. “I guess I’d better up my game so I can distract you for real.”
Vaughn walked to the door, chuckling softly. “I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with.”
I watched his ass until he was out of sight and then went back to my unpacking. Since I’d only brought enough stuff for a week, it didn’t take me long. As I hung my clothes up on the padded hangers, I laughed a little to myself because they looked so out of place in Vaughn’s kickass closet.
“What's so funny?”
I twirled around and found Vaughn leaning against the doorjamb. “You sure are light on your feet,” I accused. “I didn't hear you come back.”
“Sorry about that,” he apologized. “I wanted to pop my head in to make sure that you're getting settled in okay before I headed out to the office.”
“Are you sure that you’re totally cool with me being in your space without you? I’ll understand if you aren’t and can head out to a coffee shop or something while you’re in the office.” Going out in public right now was the last thing I wanted to do after what had happened to Morgan’s car, but I felt like I had to at least offer it as an option since Vaughn had opened up about how territorial he was with his space. It had to be weird for him, leaving me alone in his house when we just met yesterday.
Padding over, he wrapped his arms around my back. “Or you could just come into work with me.”
Tilting my head back, I searched his face for any sign he was joking but didn’t find one. “Go, or else I’ll take you up on that offer and you’ll never get anything done because I’ll ask you eleventy billion questions about your job.”
He grinned down at me with a twinkle in his dark eyes. “Will it make me sound too much like a guy if I admit that I was hoping you’d go a different route than just questions on your next-level distraction plan?”
“Nope. Not at all.” I hugged him tight and rubbed my cheek against his chest before stepping back. “It’s just the right amount of guyness.”
“I’m glad you approve.” He bent his head low and claimed my lips in a deep kiss, his tongue sweeping inside to tangle with mine. I whimpered in protest when he reluctantly pulled away. “It sucks that I have to leave, but knowing you’ll be here waiting for me will be a swift kick in the ass to get my shit done fast.”
“Hurry back,” I whispered.
He brushed his lips over mine one last time before he left. Once I was alone, I spread my laptop and notebook out on his bed and tried to get some work done on a new script. It didn’t go well, and after about half an hour, I gave up. My natural curiosity took over, and I decided to give myself a self-guided tour of his house about ten minutes after he left.
Although Vaughn had insisted he was more than okay with it, wandering around his home without him there felt a bit like a violation of his privacy to me. Not that I let my discomfort stop me since I tended to be a nosy bitch.
There were five additional bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and walk-in closet, which were huge but also maybe a quarter of the size of the one in the master bedroom. I noticed that he hadn't left as much of his personal stamp in those rooms as he had the rest of the house. But his office was a whole other story. I could too easily see myself spending hours upon end in there, surrounded by his things and wrapped up in his woodsy scent.
Although I didn’t play, I felt drawn toward the chess set sitting on a small round table in the corner. As I trailed my fingers over the pieces, an idea sparked in my head. Recalling the insanely cool Harry Potter chess set I’d seen at a cute little store a week or two ago, I decided my tour time was over, and I should head out to run some errands. Vaughn was in for a couple of surprises when he made it back from the office.
