“Yes.”

She sighed, looking back down at her pad again, and for the next ten minutes, she kept on asking questions, making me feel more like I was at a police station than a doctor’s office.

“Thank you, Ms. Byrnes.” She turned toward her computer. “Let me book your appointment with the doctor immediately.” She tapped on her keyboard. “Thursday at 4:15.”

“I—can we do it another day?” It was the day of Ethan's return.

She pursed her lips. “No, this is the only time we have. The medicals for your company were supposed to be done already. The files must be closed and sent by Friday.”

Ah, she was annoyed with me for missing the closing date.

“Thursday at 4:15 works fine.”

I whined as I grabbed my mobile when I exited the room and read the email Mrs. Winfield had left me.

She wanted me to audit all the recent marketing contracts. Fuck it! I’d be there well into the night.

Chapter 6

Ava

“Whatdoyoumeanno dinner tonight?” I asked Ethan as I exited the office for my doctor appointment.

“Well, we can have takeaway.”

I rolled my eyes. “Let me guess—you went back to work early and didn’t have a chance to go grocery shopping?”

“I did. I just wanted to be there for a couple of hours but then I had a couple of calls from my regular patients and Patricia misunderstood why I was coming to the office and booked a couple of other patients.”

I couldn’t even be mad at him; more patients meant more money, but I needed to tell him about his brother tonight. I’d spent all day rehearsing my speech, which I believed was now to the point. The only part that still needed fine-tuning was why I kept it a secret for three weeks.

I couldn’t push back again. I had mustered as much courage as I could and it needed to come out today, consequences be damned.

“Okay, takeaway at your place then, you’re paying! What time?”

“Seven?”

“Okay, fine. I have to go. The tube is here.”

“Call me after your appointment.”

“Will do.”

I made it to the doctor with more time today and as I sat in the waiting room, I was praying that I would not see the mean nurse today. My stomach growled loudly and I looked at it self-consciously. I’d been really hungry over the last few days but all I could think about was the horrible nurse calling me overweight.Whenever someone questioned my body, my mind went back to the memory of Hugo St-John coming undone just by looking at me. That simple image made me feel sexy, but I knew I had to let it go.

My stomach growled again.

I want Chinese; no, wait, Indian.I texted Ethan. You know what, I want both.

A reply quickly came through.

Whatever my princess wants, my princess gets.I was about to tell him to have some garlic bread from the Italian bakery down the road when I was called for my appointment.

The woman behind the desk smiled at me as she gestured to the chair in front of her desk, which was a nice change.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Byrnes. I’m Dr. Patel and we’ll be going through your results today. How are you feeling?”

“You tell me.”
