Today is our last day of school until next year, and I couldn’t be readier for the break. The school is a ghost town thanks to the majority of students who skip the last day. Brynn and Mark convince me to blow off the rest of the afternoon and leave with them after fourth period.

“So, this is how it’s gonna be? You sleep with me then ignore me?” Reid says as he slides into the back seat beside me.

Mark stifles a laugh as he pulls into traffic.

I shake my head and laugh. “You know me—Makenna the heartbreaker.”

Reid rests his arm along the back of the seat. “So, what happened? Captain America find out about our slumber party and hold you hostage the rest of the weekend?”

Brynn peeks over her shoulder at us. “Makenna didn’t tell you? They broke up.”

Instigator.

I was going to tell Reid, just not like this—in a car full of people while we’re skipping school.

It was actually an easy break. Carter saw it coming. After the night of the party, there was no way I was going to keep dating him—even if I hadn’t busted him groping Jennifer’s butt.

Reid’s eyes dart from Brynn back to me as if he’s asking for confirmation.

I nod. “We broke up.”

His mouth turns up in a smile that disappears as quickly as it appeared. “Are you okay? Because I will kick his ass. Just say the word.”

“I’m fine. It was my decision. Not his.”

His eyes grow wide, but he doesn’t say anything else.

The rest of the ride, I catch him staring at me while I sing too loudly and way off key with Brynn. Mark tells us to shut up, and Reid just laughs.

We spend the afternoon at The Fly, a hidden treasure by the zoo. It’s actually more of a grassy picnic area by the river, but it’s tucked away, making it an ideal spot for people who want a little privacy. Reid persuades me to go on a walk along the river after we finish eating lunch.

“Are the parties always like that?” I ask, purposefully avoiding any more talk about Carter.

Reid laughs and shakes his head. “Only the crazy, senior ones.”

I focus on the sidewalk under my feet. “And you go to a lot of them?”

I’ve never been a party kind of girl, and I’m hating how it feels right now to think we might be two completely different people.

“I’ve been to a few, but it’s not really my thing.”

I look up at him. “So, what is your thing?”

He stops walking and grabs my hand. “You really want to know?”

Before I can even respond, his mouth is on mine, prying my lips apart with his tongue, and I am lost in him. This must be what they mean by your knees going weak, because I literally have to wrap my arms around his neck to keep from collapsing.

“I knew you wanted me to kiss you,” he says when he pulls away. His face lights up with an arrogant grin.

I shove at his chest and narrow my eyes at him. “Don’t ruin it.”

“Ruin what?” He grabs my hand and pulls me back toward him.

“Our first kiss.”

He wraps his arms around my waist and looks me deep in the eyes. “Well, we can always do it again.”

I feign shock. “You don’t get a second chance at a first kiss.”
