“It’s for a good cause, and you said you’ve always wanted to go to Paris. Why not bid on this, help charity, and go on vacation?”

“You don’t need to spend fifty thousand dollars to take me to Paris; that’s just insane. Alexander, you are going overboard now.”

“Why can’t you see that I just want to give you everything? You deserve the very best in this world, and I intend to give that to you.”

I looked around the room, waiting for someone else to bid, but no one did.

“Sold to the man in the navy suit in the back with the beautiful young lady in lilac,” Ms. Hemingway announced.

“Before now, I’ve never gone on a vacation because I’ve had no one to share it with, and now I have you. I want to travel the world with you.”

I understood he wanted to see the world and that was sweet, but was it worth fifty thousand dollars of his hard-earned money? If he would easily spend fifty thousand dollars on vacation, then how much did he spend on other things? Howwas I ever going to keep up with him as a housekeeper? I would never be able to contribute fully to this relationship like he did.

Ms. Hemingway continued to auction off vacation packages, antiques, and other things to help raise money. I had this overwhelming feeling that someone was watching me. I kept looking over my shoulder but didn’t notice anyone.

Every time I heard someone bid, I cringed. They had more money than they needed. One package went as high as two hundred thousand dollars.Holy crap. I could buy a house for that much. How was I going to live in his world? Was I able to give in and just let Alexander spoil me?

Chapter Fourteen

ALEXANDER

The auction was over, and tonight raised a lot of money. I was happy to contribute. I didn’t have a lack of money, that’s for sure. Ella did great, just as I expected.

“You ready to go home?” I asked Ella.

She looked exhausted and angry. “Definitely. This night has made my heart hurt.”

“What do you mean?”

“The amount of money people like you are willing to spend on things.”

“Like me? I work hard for my money, so why not put it to good use? Charities are the way to go.”

I wasn’t sure why she said that. This would be her life if she chose to stay with me. Events like this would be a regular thing to attend.

I saw Shawn heading over to the limo, and I knew exactly what he wanted to do. Guys’ night.

“Hey, are you ready?” He yelled across the parking lot.

“Yeah, let me get Ella in the car.”

I pulled her close, grazed her lips, and say goodbye.

“Let’s go,” Shawn yelled and waved me over to his car.

It’d been so long since we had done anything outside of work together. “What’s your plan?” I asked, sliding into his car and shutting the door.

Instead of responding, he just took off and didn’t stop until we pulled up to a bar. Something to know about me, I wasn’t really a drinker. Occasionally I would enjoy a glass of scotch, but like two maybe three times a year. He knew this.

“You know I don’t drink.”

“Yeah, you don’t have to. Be my wingman. Like the old days. Come on,” he replied as I followed behind him into the bar.

This was not what I was expecting when coming out tonight. I’d rather be with Ella.

“Not sure I’d be a good wingman anymore.”

He raised his eyebrows and smiled. “Believe me, you will do fine.”
