My wolf’s excitement mixed into my own energy. The rage of my impending marriage, the frustration at having a mate who didn’t even know she was mine, even the irritation at too many stupid idiots leading smaller packs all faded into the excitement of my succession.

I walked back over to the table where Kiara sat.

I could be in charge of my own future now.

Kiara watched as I extended my hand to her and smiled. She didn’t move.

“Care for a run?”

Colton smiled at me as he stood already putting his jacket on the back of the chair. Most of the wolves were already stripped and more of them had shifted.

“I can’t shift yet,” she said.

I smirked.

“Maybe this is all she needs. A little incentive. Have you ever been to a succession ceremony?”

Kiara shook her head. I leaned into her ear.

“Well, I suggest you run.”

“Females, off to the forest with you. The hunt is beginning,” announced one of the elders as he conferred with my father. Perhaps they had persuaded him to make this happen, I suppose I’d be able to ask another time. Tonight was about me and what I wanted.

“Come on Alpha Devon, come catch me. Make this official.”

I looked up across the table and the smile on my face shriveled up and left nothing but anger.

“Go run. But don’t expect me to catch you,” I said to Nessa.

Kiara looked at the female and then back at me. Had I not been watching them both I might have missed the look that passed over Kiara’s face and the way Nessa might have just feared her. Just a little.

“Catch me if you can, alpha,” Kiara said and wasn’t sure if this was her show of dominance. I didn’t care. She needed to be strong to be mine.

Her finger traced over my jawline, and then she turned to the forest. She wasn’t shifting, but she was still quick and into the forest she disappeared.

My wolf burst from me seconds later. I wouldn’t fight him any longer. I still had no plan, but tonight I didn’t fucking care.

CHAPTER14

Kiara

The wind kissed my cheeks, and I welcomed the feeling. I was free. I’d been dying to run for so long, but this time I didn’t want to run away from anything.

Something changed within me. I couldn’t put my finger on what, but I was making a choice. One I wanted. He had made me a choice, and I wanted to see where this all could go.

I wanted to feel the bond of a pack and the touch of a mate.

Tingles of something new chased along my spine. Freedom. I could just keep running. My wolf still wasn’t ready to come out. We were still weaker than we should have been. But, this was the first feeling of what normal could be. So we ran and kept running.

A howl, louder than the rest reached me and every fiber in my body knew exactly who it was.

I imagined the bitch, Nessa. She thought she was a princess. Thought she could have everything she wanted. The idea of her hands all over Devon’s muscular body had bile burning my throat. No. That was not going to work.

I still ran, because he’d told me to. I had no idea where to go. I sniffed the air trying to let my wolf find their scents. Her scent, maybe.I would kill her, that’s what I would do. I would fix the problem of the throbbing jealousy running through me.

I started to slow down, because logic reared its ugly head. I couldn’t fight her in this form. Still, she wouldn’t be allowed to live once I figured out my wolf issue.

I might have been failing at being a wolf right now, but I could still take something from that bitch.
