I sucked on my finger as he looked around me. Why else was he here other than to see Devon?
“Devon? He isn’t here. Didn’t you pass him?”
He shook his head, but the way he cast down his eyes made him look younger and more innocent.
“I actually stepped out and went to my room to give him a minute, but then I wondered if I was wrong to leave him alone with you. He’s different around you.”
I pulled my finger out of my mouth seeing it still bleeding and wrapped it in the hem of my shirt.
“I don’t know what that means. He seems insane and indecisive. But he’s already mated?”
My stomach twisted and bile burned up my throat.
I backed up and fell onto the bed. I’d heard him when he’d told me my timing was shitty. But I wasn’t all there still, my mind had been in a fog. The stupid drugs were still draining my energy and my ability to comprehend. Or that is what I was telling myself. Why was it hitting me so much harder right now?
“Kiara? Are you okay?”
I heard him walking towards me, but I couldn’t look up. Not yet. I wasn’t sure If I’d cry or overreact by running out that fucking door.
Running sounded so much better right now. A few more deep breaths and I got rid of the sudden sickness that had no explanation other than he’d been the one dream I’d held onto for years.
“I’m fine. I think, I think I just need a new dream?”
He paused and by the lines on his forehead I was certain he was confused.
“Did you have a dream? What made you change it now?”
This guy was nice and he was listening to me. And even more, I wasn’t ready to punch him in the face. If I got close to him could I keep a comfy room like this? No one had asked me to cook, clean, or starve for that matter.
I swallowed. Devon had threatened me to stay put and they would still feed me. I should have been triggered. I should have felt worried and squirming to leave.
So I lied a little when I told Colton what my dream had been.
“My dream was to always run free. Hide in the human cities. I learned long ago there was no Prince Charming. Not for me.”
I flopped down on the bed suddenly too tired to take another run around the room. The bed sank as Colton sat down next to me.
It was endearing as I watched him fidget. His arm looked like it might try and hold me before he pulled himself back in and locked his hands on his lap.
“Devon, he came looking for you, you know that?”
I shook my head.
“What do you mean?”
He was quiet for a few more minutes.
“Are you really her?” he asked me.
“I think so? Depending on what her you mean? He seems to have a few her options.”
I tried to force something like a smile.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Look, are you the female he met all those years ago? I think you are, he seems to know you are. I was there when he fell apart.”
The room went cold but I looked around and there wasn’t a single window open.
“I’m not trying to start anything. I don’t know that you are who he thinks you are, but if you are. He looked for you and it destroyed him when they said you were dead,” Colton said.
