Lizzy Andrews had a break-in.

No, her ex-boyfriend was harassing her.

Actually, she just wanted to meet the new deputy.

Joke’s on everyone—I just have careless fingers and a too-sensitive phone.

Chapter 2

Lizzy

Iamsogladthe day is over and tomorrow is Saturday. As expected, everyone at work kept asking about my 911 call last night. I’m about to write the situation and tape it to my classroom door so I don’t have to repeat myself. Maybe the principal will let me borrow the microphone so I can do story-time over the loudspeaker.

I’m standing outside for dismissal, waiting for all my students to get picked up. Then, I’ll be home free.

A few students are left, and I wish I could telepathically tell their parents to hurry up so I can go home. Maybe after yesterday’s text message mix-up, I shouldn’t be communicating with parents at all, fake telepathy included.

“Ms. Andrews, I need to go to the bathroom.”

I look at Jenna, one of my students. “Go quickly.”

This is why I urge them to use the bathroom before we leave.

She races off to the bathroom, and I call out, “Walk please!”

“I don’t know why I bother,” I tell myself as I turn back to my students.

My eyes widen, and my heart drops.Oh, no.

Mr. Hot Deputy is walking my way. His eyes narrow when they land on me, and I swallow thickly.

“Are you here to arrest me?” I blurt out without thinking.

“No.” He shakes his head.

I mean, delayed arrest isn’t a thing, right? I’m innocent.

Some of the other teachers whisper, and I glare at them.

“Sorry, Lizzy, but this is funny,” Andrea, the other first grade teacher, says.

“Har, har. Laugh it up.” I look back at the deputy.

“Can I help you then?”

“Uncle Nate!” Walker, the new student whose mom I texted last night, says.

Wonderful.

“Uncle?” I lift my brows.

“You’re Ms. Andrews?” He crosses his arms.

“Yes.” I look at Walker. “Sweetie, I need to verify your uncle is authorized to take you home.”

Walker looks up at me with his face scrunched up. “Why? He lives with me.”

“School rules.”
