Kayla snorted.
“You’re one to talk,” Catherine said.
“I didn’t say anything,” Kayla replied.
“Please don’t, you guys,” Lauren intervened again. “We are all tense over the vandalism. No need for us to fight.”
“I’m sorry. I’m being a bitch. It’s not on purpose,” Kayla apologized to her friends. “Can we make a plan? I think I just need to go and stop thinking about this.”
Catherine stood and walked over to Kayla behind her desk. “Babe, what is going on?” She bent down and gave her a hug.
That was all it took. She didn’t want sympathy or anything from them because she’d start crying again. And she did. Lauren joined the group hug, and they both murmured to her how it was all going to be okay.
“It’s a lot,” Kayla admitted as they pulled away. “They said it was going to be a month or more.”
“Have Evan hire someone else,” Catherine said.
“No, I’m just going to let the insurance handle it.”
“Why?” Catherine’s shock was mirrored in Lauren’s expression.
“I don’t need him to come in and save everything.” Saying it out loud sounded stupid, like a teenager refusing to do something because she was asked.
“What happened with you two?” Lauren asked. “He’s your friend. Plus, isn’t he your partner here?”
“I don’t want him to.” That was the whole answer. If he did then she’d see him more and then she’d fall into bed with him again.
Her phone rang, cutting off their conversation. She’d never been more grateful for a distraction.
“Hello?” she answered the unknown number.
“Hi, is this the owner of Blind Date?” a man’s voice said.
“It is,” she confirmed. “I’m not currently doing interviews, though, sorry.”
“I’m calling from Milestone Construction about the work needed. We were contracted today and requested to start as soon as possible.”
“By the insurance company?” Confused, she looked around for a pen to take their information. “They said it would take a while to get started.”
“No ma’am. We were contracted directly from a Mr. Evan—”
Kayla cut him off. “What?” She stood, pissed.
“I just wanted to touch base with you and see when we could meet and get started,” the man said, skipping over her outburst.
“I’m going to have to call you back.”
Kayla ended the call and grabbed her keys. “I’m going to hurt him. Evan hired a contractor to start immediately.”
“That’s good news,” Catherine reminded her.
“I want to do this on my own! Why does no one see that?” Kayla raged.
She stormed out, leaving her friends staring after her. To their credit, they didn’t follow but they’d probably call Evan and warn him. No matter, he was still going to get what was coming to him.
