“With all that?”

“I need it to get some work done this weekend.” She had no idea what she’d even grabbed.

He walked over and reached in, pulling something out. “You need your stapler at home to work this weekend?” he questioned.

“Maybe.” She was so dumb.

“I think I’m making you nervous, Kayla.”

She skirted around him, making for the door. He was spot on but she wasn’t going to admit it. With one hand on the door handle, Evan closed in on her, putting his hand on the top of the door.

“Why did you ask me that in your text?”

His breath was close enough to be felt on her neck, and the shiver that rocked through her was unable to be contained.

“Turn around,” he commanded.

She wasn’t one to listen to a man when he commanded her to do anything, but apparently, that didn’t apply to him. Turning to face him was involuntary, a movement she didn’t even realize she was doing until it was already done.

Evan lifted her heavy bag off her shoulder and set it on the ground. His hand that wasn’t on the door came up to her neck, holding her just below her ear, thumb stroking her cheek, seconds before his lips crashed onto hers.

It wasn’t a sweet kiss. It was possessive and hard and hot as hell. His tongue probed for entrance, and she parted her lips, giving it to him. As she did, he groaned, or growled, or some mix of the two, the vibration pulsing through her to her core.

Then, just as quickly as it started, it ended. Evan pulled away, planting one last kiss on her forehead before putting distance between them.

“I hope that answers your question. The next move is yours, Kayla. I won’t hunt you down again. I’ll let myself out so you can put all that stuff back on your desk.” He held her stapler out for her to take from him.

She took it and stepped away from the door. The second it closed again, she dropped to the floor against it. What the hell was that, and why did she need it again so badly?

ChapterThirteen

Evan

Today has been shit,Evan thought as he dropped onto this couch. Nothing had gone right at work. He hadn’t heard from Kayla either, which was probably the main problem if he was willing to admit that to himself.

Thinking about Kayla brought back more memories of last night and how she was probably never going to talk to him again. He fucked up, but in his defense, she had done it first.

Sure, he’d almost kissed her on her couch that day, but he hadn’t. Then she had to go and bring it up like it wasn’t already on his mind. Just knowing that a week later it was on her mind still too had been all it took.

It hadn’t been his intention to kiss her when he went to her office. He wanted to talk to her. Then she’d been so nervous and packed half her desk into her bag that he couldn’t help it. Never in his life had he seen Kayla nervous, and it just did something to him.

He had taken charge, and sweet God, she’d let him. Then he’d kissed her and walked away. Had he stayed, it would have been more than kissing, and he wasn’t so far gone that he didn’t recognize that they both needed space to process that kiss.

Hot was an understatement. It had rocked his world in a way that no other kiss had. It was electric, and he wanted more. Hopefully, she did too. Now he just had to hope that she would reach out, because he wasn’t sure he could handle it if she didn’t.

Around lunchtime, he’d gotten another message from K in the app. He hadn’t opened it yet and wasn’t sure he wanted to until he heard from Kayla.

Something about her at the restaurant had been off, and he couldn’t place a finger on what it was. It could have just been nerves, for his part, but she seemed familiar. Leave it to his friends to set him up with someone he already knew.

Ignoring the message, Evan scrolled through his contacts to see who he knew that started with K, other than Kayla. A few names stood out, but they were all easily dismissed just by what he knew of her from chatting and voice alone.

They whispered in the restaurant, but he was positive that at least one K in his phone didn’t know how to whisper. She was louder than everyone in the room, always. Thank God it wasn’t her.

Giving in, he opened K’s message and read it.

K:Thank you for dinner. I had a good time meeting you.

E:I did too.
