“Elena.” There were footsteps, and then Jason was sitting on the edge of the bed. His arms went around her, and Elena was tipped forward onto his arm. “It’s okay. I’m here. You’re going to be fine.”
“I don’t feel it.” Elena rested her forehead on his shoulder. “I haven’t been feeling well lately. I thought it was just a cold, but it just won’t budge.”
“How long have you felt like this?”
“I don’t know. Quite a while.”
“And why didn’t you tell me?”
Elena sighed and lifted her head to look at him. “What can you do? I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself.”
Jason shook his head and brushed her hair behind her ear. “Honestly, you’re definitely stubborn. I’ll agree with your mom on that one. But you can lean on other people, you know.”
“I know. It’s just not easy.”
Jason brushed his lips over hers. “Lean on me. I’ll let you.”
Elena found herself smiling at that. She was about to say something when the doctor came in. Elena tried to sit up, but she moved a little too quickly and had to hold onto Jason until the dizziness passed.
“Elena Duncan?”
“Yes.” Elena swallowed back the bile building in her throat. “Are you here to tell me I can go home?”
“You can soon, although you’re going to have to take it easy.” The doctor paused, observing her through his wire-rimmed glasses. “We also need to give you an ultrasound. Just to make sure the baby is safe after your fainting spell.”
The words were flying around Elena’s head, but they weren’t sinking in. Did he say what she thought he said?
Jason was staring at the doctor. “What did you just say? Baby?”
“Didn’t you know? Elena is pregnant. And from her blood tests, she’s at least six weeks along.”
CHAPTER19
JASON
Elena was pregnant. That had been shocking in and of itself, but the revelation that had followed had blown Jason’s mind and turned his world upside down. He sat on the couch where he and Elena had had sex only a few hours before, staring at the opposite wall. Not only was she pregnant, but she was having sextuplets.
Six babies. How was that even possible? It had to be a mistake.
But Jason had seen the ultrasound. There were six heartbeats. Elena was carrying his kids.
He would be a father in a few months. And Jason couldn’t get his head around it. He hadn’t really thought about having kids. At his point in life, he was more focused on work and getting the Wolves up and running properly. He didn’t have time for a relationship or children.
You’re in a relationship with Elena. And you’re going to have to make time for these children.
God, what was he going to do now?
Six babies.
What had he done?
“Jason?”
Jason vaguely heard someone’s voice coming from the door. His vision clearing, he saw Carl coming towards him, his expression worried.
“Carl?”
“You okay? You look like someone’s just told you you’re dying.”
