“I do know.” Fleur grinned, her eyes glinting mischievously. “You could invite your fella as well. Then we’ll both have a guy with us.”

Elena almost dropped her mug, the coffee sloshing over her fingers. She put the mug down and grabbed a napkin.

“My fella?” She cleaned up the coffee splashes. “I don’t have a fella.”

“Are you sure about that? There’s something about you, and I figured it was because of a guy.” Fleur winked. “Is it a secret? Do you have to keep it under wraps?”

Elena wished that her little sister didn’t know her so well. She had hit the bullseye. While she and Jason weren’t official — they were keeping everything secret and away from prying eyes — Fleur had noticed changes about her that were related to Jason. Somehow, nobody at the club had noticed anything, although Elena had a feeling that Carl suspected something; he had been giving her knowing looks in recent weeks.

Given the unrest still happening around the team, Jason didn’t think it was a good idea to open up their relationship to the public. He was worried that it would upset everyone, and Elena would end up becoming a target. Elena didn’t think that was the case, but she wasn’t about to change Jason’s mind now it was made up.

The sex certainly had a way of making her comply.

Elena debated telling her sister about Jason. They had agreed not to say anything, but Fleur was her family. She could keep a secret. Looking around her, Elena saw that they were alone. All the same, she lowered her voice.

“Let’s just say we’re keeping things quiet for various reasons.”

“Oh?” Fleur looked interested. “That sounds exciting.”

“Trust me, it’s not. But not having people scrutinizing us does feel good.”

“And I bet Jason Munro didn’t want to have you made a target if he’s still trying to win everyone over.”

Elena stared. “What? I never said it was Jason.”

“You didn’t need to. I figured it out.”

There was no point in denying it. Elena swallowed.

“Yeah, it’s him. And you can see why we’re not saying a word.”

“Given the news I’ve read about him, I can understand. But don’t you think this is going to end badly?”

“How do you mean?”

“Well, it’s going to be found out sooner or later.” Fleur sat forward, her smile fading away to a frown. “Also, he could be lying to you about having some type of relationship. He could be stringing you along and keeping it under wraps so he can mess about with you without judgment.”

Elena didn’t like how that was phrased. She shook her head. “No, Jason wouldn’t do that. He’s not that kind of guy.”

“How do you know he isn’t?”

“Because I do.”

Fleur’s eyes widened. “You’re not in love with him, are you?”

Elena bit back a wince. When she had come to this conclusion, she had thought it would be a great revelation, and she would be happy about it. Instead, it just left her with the feeling that she was destined for heartbreak. That was not how falling in love was meant to be. If Jason wasn’t keeping their affair quiet, then maybe this wouldn’t be her mindset.

While she knew she was in a mess, and she should be putting distance between them if he wasn’t going to acknowledge her publicly, Elena couldn’t stop herself from seeing him. Jason was like an addiction.

God, she was so screwed up.

Her phone started vibrating in her pocket. Elena fumbled for it, and saw a message from Jason. The sight of his name made her heart skip a beat. Her hands trembled as she opened the message.

“I have to go. I’m needed back at the stadium.”

“Do you want me to tag along, or should I make myself useful elsewhere?” Fleur asked.

“I’ll be…busy.” If Jason was asking her to come to him, she would be busy. She fished out her keys and handed them to her sister. “Make yourself at home at my place. I’ll take you out to dinner tonight.”
