Mack nodded.
“So, why do you think we can help you?” Ewan asked.
“Because we think one of you or your men were at the meeting, and we know you’re aware of the cops.”
“You know an awful lot without anyone witnessing the meeting.”
Mack stiffened. The man didn’t look concerned about it, and in fact looked amused for some reason. “The only thing we care about is protecting our woman.”
Ewan tipped his head forward. “I understand that.”
There was a commotion in the outer office.
“Boss, there’s a young woman and man here.”
“She’s yours?” Ewan asked.
Jace nodded. “Yes. The man is just dropping her off.”
Mack could see Ewan study them and then call out to his men. “Let them by.”
Kane and Kaylin came to the door.
“Is there a problem here?” Kane asked as he stared at Ewan.
“Everything’s good, Kane. We’ll talk later.”
Kane nodded. “If I don’t hear from you in thirty minutes, I’m returning with reinforcements.”
Mack could tell that amused Ewan and nodded at Kane. “Thanks for dropping her off.”
“No problem. Talk to you soon.”
The outer door closed, leaving the four in Jace’s office.
Fuck. The last thing he wanted was for Kaylin to be in the same room as the mafia.
She stopped and looked at Ewan for a long time. “Hi.” She stepped forward with her hand out. “Who are you?”
Ewan smiled and shook her hand. “My name is Ewan.”
“I’m Kaylin.”
“It’s nice to meet you.” She walked over to stand by Mack’s chair. He reached for her hand and squeezed it.
“Why don’t you go to your office while we finish up this meeting?” Mack said.
“Okay.” Kaylin bounced a few times and smiled at Ewan. “It was very nice to meet you.”
“You, too, sweetheart.”
Mack watched Kaylin hurry out of the office.
If the smile on Ewan’s face hadn’t been so gentle, he would have been scared. But it seemed his little had charmed the man, which didn’t surprise him.
“How in the hell did that woman survive on the streets?” Ewan asked.
“Pure luck,” Jace said.
