“They’ll get back to you. Have a good day.”
Jace lay down his phone.
“Who’d you talk to?” Mack asked.
“If I had to guess, I would say the butler.”
Mack snorted. “I didn’t know they existed around here.”
“I guess if you’re crazy rich, you can have whatever you want.”
“So now we wait for their call,” Mack said.
Jace nodded. “I hope we’re doing the right thing.”
“There’s no going back now.”
Chapter Twenty-One
Mack heard the outer door open and close, and then nothing. He stood and walked out to find three men dressed in expensive suits looking ready to kill at a moment’s notice.
“May I help you?” he asked.
Jace came out of his office.
The one in front took a step forward. “I think I’m here to help you. You’re the one who called and asked to talk with one of the Macleans, right?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Ewan Maclean.”
“I’m Mack Lenz, and this is Jace Foreman.”
The man didn’t try to shake hands, he just tipped his head forward.
“What is it you need?” Ewan asked.
“Can we go sit down in my office?” Jace asked.
Ewan looked at the men behind him and nodded. His guys seemed to understand what he wanted and stood by the door. Mack followed Jace into the office and sat in one of the chairs while Ewan sat in the other.
“My brothers and I are curious as to what two men that work for the D.A. want with us?” Ewan asked.
Jace went through the story but didn’t tell them Kaylin saw anything, just that they suspected because they found out she was in the vicinity at the time.
“So, this girl is from the streets?” Ewan asked.
Mack stiffened. “Yeah, but she didn’t belong there.”
“Few of them do. It’s just how you’re describing her. She’s very young and naïve. That’s a deadly combination on the streets. How did she survive more than a day?”
“She made a friend with a homeless woman that protected her.”
“She was very fortunate,” Ewan said.
“Yes,” Jace said.
“So, these cops think she can identify them?”
