Mack stood. “I’ll get my work done and take the things I can do out of the office home.”
Jace nodded. “Same here.”
Jace sat back and stared at the wall. He couldn’t get the picture out of his mind of his little Kaylin being hurt. A blinding fury wanted to take over, but he knew from being in the FBI he had to control his emotions, or it could blind him to the things that matter.
He wouldn’t let anything get in the way of protecting her. Not even himself.
Chapter Sixteen
Mack walked down to Kaylin’s office and smiled. She was bent over the desk with her tongue peeking out of the corner of her mouth as she concentrated on the picture. Both he and Jace would gush over it and then send it to Kane instead of the police. The police would laugh, and he didn’t want anyone hurting her feelings if she found out.
“Are you ready to go, baby?”
Her head popped up. “Yes. I’m not done with some of the shadings, but I can take it home with us and work on it there.”
“Sounds good to me.” He held his hand out. “Let’s go. I’m hungry.”
She rolled her eyes. “You’re always hungry.”
He grinned. “I’m a growing boy.”
“If you guys didn’t work out every day, you’d be growing all right, just not in the way you want.”
Mack threw his head back and laughed. “So, you’re going to be a brat tonight?”
“Maybe … maybe not.”
He rolled his eyes. “Come on, let’s go.”
He pulled her down the hallway and stopped when he got a glimpse of the picture. “Let me see that.”
“It’s not done.”
“I know.”
He lifted the paper. Holy shit. He had not expected it to be so perfect. If they gave her enough time, it would look like a picture from a camera.
“Baby, this is so good. Why didn’t you tell us you were an artist?”
“Because I’m not.”
“Kaylin, you’re very talented. You have a gift. It’s up to you to decide what you want to do with it. But it’s amazing. Come on, let’s show Jace.”
Mack handed it to Jace. “Look at this.”
He saw his friend’s eyes widen. “Fuck, babe, this is so damn good.”
“You guys really like it?” she asked.
Mack gripped her shoulders in his hands and bent over to be more at her level. “Baby, have we ever lied to you?”
“Well, you did tell me that toads weren’t slimy, and they were.”
Mack rolled his eyes. “Babe, it was a frog. They’re different from toads.”
“But I touched it.”
Mack snorted and shook his head. “You can’t count that.”
