“This could be a good thing you know.”
“Really, how?” She pulled out the chair across from his desk and sat down.
“These vigilantes—assuming that's who is behind this—must be getting their information about our family somehow.”
She sucked in a breath. “And I just found how. I could have been on the phone to Alex or Liam and mentioned that we’d located Zach.”
Her dad dragged a hand down his chin. “All the more reason for him not to leave Alex and Liam’s place. Do you have any idea when it was planted?”
If she’d found it sooner, she would have told her dad about it. “No. I never would have found it at all if I hadn’t tried to move my desk. I bought a bookcase and file cabinet today to organize my office.”
“Did you ask Mason to sweep the rest of the place?”
“No, but I will. He’d have to come when the center is closed. Maybe tonight he can do it.”
“Good thinking.”
“Were you able to trace Zach’s phone call?” she asked.
CHAPTEREIGHTEEN
“I tracedthe call Zach received about the injured hiker, but it went to a burner phone,” Tawny’s dad said.
Damn. “These people seem very organized.”
“Sadly, yes.”
“Were you able to identify any fingerprints from Zach’s car?”
“Not exactly. Most of the prints were smudged, but we have a few decent ones. It’s possible they belong to Naomi, Zach’s ex-girlfriend’s, but I have no way of knowing the last time she was in the car, nor do I have her prints on file.”
“They broke up quite a while ago, so I doubt they’d be hers. Were the prints you found on the wheel or somewhere else?”
“Most were concentrated in two places—the wheel and the passenger side dashboard.”
“Maybe it was the shooter’s female partner.”
“That’s possible,” he said. “I'll keep trying to identify them, but I’m more worried about that bug in your office. Who had access to it?”
She blew out a breath, trying to think. “Any of my employees, I guess, since I’m often in the back or running errands. Don’t forget my office is next to the bathroom, so someone looking for an animal could have gone down the hallway, seen my office, and planted the bug.”
“Does your office have your name on it?”
“Yes. Remember when I was dating Sam Litchfield?” Her dad nodded. “He had it made for me. It was a nice gesture, so I put it up.”
“I know Mason will scan for additional bugs tonight, but have you considered planting a few bugs of your own?”
“Not really, but when Mason stops over, I’ll ask him what equipment I’ll need to monitor that. Do you really think it’s one of them?”
“We shouldn’t eliminate anyone just yet, but let Mason handle the technical stuff. He can listen in on his end.”
Mason was better at it than she ever would be. “I hope he does it at home. We wouldn’t want anyone to overhear anything.”
Her father nodded. “I agree. If I had to guess, I'd say your rescue center might be connected to these attacks.”
Tawny sank back against her chair. “Brett is one of us, and I’ve been working with Alan for over three years. He’s very grateful for the job.”
“Ex-cons usually are. What about your new girl? Julia, is it?”
