Normally, Tawny liked to do it herself, but she trusted her employees. “That would be great.”
“Do you want me to walk you to your car?”
He was sweet. “I’ll be fine.”
Tawny returned to her office to grab her coat and purse. On her way out, she told Julia she could head out too. “Brett needs another few minutes to finish a chore, and then he’ll lock up.”
“Okay, great.”
With the clinic all set, Tawny rushed out to her car. The wind was quite strong, and she hoped another storm wasn’t on the horizon. To make sure her father was in his office, Tawny called him. When her dad answered, she told him that she needed to see him.
“Of course. I’ll be here.”
Tawny started the engine and pulled out. She then called Zach, who answered on the first ring. Poor thing must be bored. “What’s up?” he asked.
She told him that her office had been bugged, and that Mason had confirmed it.
“That sucks. I hope your car isn’t bugged.” He then chuckled.
“That’s not even funny.”
“Sorry.”
“I called because Mason is coming over tonight, so can you tell Alex and Liam that I’ll be picking up dinner?”
“Sure.”
“I probably won’t be home for another hour, though.”
“No problem. The men aren’t back from the barn yet.”
“I'm not surprised. Did Alex and Liam find your med kit and wallet?”
“Yes, they did! It was under a bush near the cave. I guess whoever took it off me, didn’t care about it.”
“That is odd,” she said.
“I’m just happy to have it back.”
“You and me both.”
"See you soon."
Tawny swiped off her phone and checked her mirrors once more. She wanted to believe these people had no interest in her since she was a female, but if that were the case, why bug her office? Did they think she’d mention where a relative might be?
When she reached town, she pulled in front of the sheriff’s department, cut the engine, and called in a dinner request. Being a regular at the diner, she knew the menu very well. Once the server took her order, she said it would be ready in twenty minutes. That would give Tawny time to pick her father’s brain.
Since no one else was in the station, Tawny stopped and chatted a bit with Elana. Even though they were alone, Tawny didn’t say all that much about Zach other than he was doing well, albeit complaining about not being able to go back to work yet.
At her dad’s office, she knocked and entered.
“Hey, sweetie. You sounded upset over the phone. Is everything okay?”
“No. Someone bugged my office.”
“Oh, no. Are you sure?”
She explained about asking Mason to check it out. “We didn’t remove it yet. He’s coming over tonight to talk about what we should do.”
