Damn. The impact with the truck must have bent the frame.

He lifted his gun and slammed it against the window. He saw a crack. He slammed again and the tempered glass shattered.

Bennett lifted his legs and rammed a foot against the window, knocking the glass away.

He swam through the window, turned, and held a hand out for Hadley. She was just a shadow in the front seat of the car, but then her fingers brushed his.

He pulled her out of the vehicle, and they kicked to the surface of the river. As soon as their heads broke the surface, relief hit him.

Gunfire ripped through the air.

Bullets peppered the water around them.

Fucking hell. Adrenaline surging, Bennett yanked her under the water, kicking strongly. He still had his weapon in one hand, and he gripped her hard with his other. No one was hurting his woman.

Bullets whizzed close by, and he yanked Hadley against him, shielding her.

On the bank, he saw a big man launch himself at one of the gunmen.

“Come on.” Bennett pulled her toward the edge.

They kicked and dived under again, swimming hard. Finally, they reached the rocky shore right at the edge of the river.

As they dragged themselves out of the water, he saw Cleopatra’s Needle rising up nearby and stone steps leading from the water’s edge. The Egyptian obelisk was flanked by the statues of two black sphinxes.

Ignoring the cold seeping into his bones, Bennett lifted his gun, and he moved up the stairs, dripping water. Hadley was right behind him.

He circled around the sphinx—
