The SUV roared up right behind them.

Shit. “They’ve pinned us in.” She leaned forward and opened the glove box of the Bentley, unsurprised to find a SIG Sauer handgun. She grabbed it, checked it over, and slid the magazine in.

Bennett had pulled another handgun from the center console. It sat easily in his hand. His face was set, ready for a fight.

She watched the warrior come out.

There was a flash of movement out the side window. She turned her head.

And her entire chest turned to ice.

“Oh, fuck, Bennett. Brace!”

“What—?” He looked past her and cursed.

A garbage truck rumbled out of a side street, driving directly toward them.

Ahead, the biker pulled out a gun. Hadley guessed whoever was in the SUV was armed as well.

If they got out, they’d be gunned down.

There was no time to react anyway.

The garbage truck hit them. There was a crunch of metal and the Bentley rocked wildly, then started to slide.

Bennett was cursing steadily and threw an arm across Hadley’s chest. The car kept sliding, pushed by the truck. A back window shattered.

Then the car slammed into the stone guardrail by the river.

Oh, God.She met Bennett’s hazel gaze.

Then the railing gave way and the car rammed straight through it. There was a brief second of nothing, then they hit the water.

Quickly, faster than she’d thought possible, murky water filled the car.

“Belts off,” he said sharply.

Hadley unsnapped hers. The water was rising fast. She tried to find her calm. She wasn’t a huge fan of water. She was English, and wasn’t a great swimmer. She liked the beach…when she was sitting on the sand sipping a cocktail.

“Hadley.” A big hand gripped hers. The water was rising up past their chests. “I’ll get you out.”

Certainty filled her. She was with Bennett. “I know. Let’s do this.”

He gripped her chin, and pressed a quick, firm kiss to her lips.

The car kept sinking, the water reaching her mouth.

Then they both sucked in deep breaths, and the water completely filled the car, trapping them in a silent, murky world.

CHAPTERSIXTEEN

As the cold water closed over him, Bennett felt himself slip into battle readiness. It was a place where you let your worries and anxiety go, and focused only on the mission. On the primary objective.

Escape.

He needed to get Hadley to safety. He’d keep her safe, no matter what.

The car was sinking fast, and the water was dark. As soon as the vehicle was full, he tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t budge.
