She managed to sneak a glance at his shoulder, but it was too dark for her to be able to tell if she’d left a drool patch.

Please, don’t have left a drool patch. Please.

“Do you need some more painkillers?” Webb asked from behind her.

Wonderful. More people to be witness to her embarrassment.

“I’m fine.”

Zander turned and looked at Webb. More silent communication. She glanced out the window, but it was too dark to see anything.

Awesome.

She had no idea where they were going. No idea what they planned to do with her when they got there. All she knew was that most of these guys seemed to dislike her and would probably be happy to get rid of her.

She loved feeling welcomed.

Then she noticed something was missing. “Where’s Squeaks?”

If one of them had taken him from her, then she was going to rain down a mass of pain and destruction on these assholes.

“He’s here. You dropped him.” Zander leaned forward and picked Squeaks up off the floor. She barely refrained from snatching the mouse from his hand. She held the toy close, knowing how stupid she was being.

All he had to do was take Squeaks from her, threaten him, and she’d spill whatever he wanted to know. Not that there was much more she could tell him about Carl.

But there were things she didn’t want anyone knowing.

“Did you take his stuff?” she suddenly asked.

“Your boyfriend’s, you mean?” Zander replied.

She winced. “Don’t call him that.”

“Why not? Is that not what he is?”

“Not anymore. You think I’d stay with a guy who did this to me?” But she had in the past, hadn’t she? She didn’t want to think about that. About all the mistakes she’d made.

Zander just grunted.

“I don’t have any loyalty to Carl. I’ve told you what I know. I’m not going to be able to help you find him.”

Another grunt. She remembered her grandmother having this gnome statue that sat at the back door and would fart every time someone walked past it.

Zander was like that gnome, except he grunted instead of farting. She grinned.

“What are you thinking about?” Zander asked.

“Farting gnomes,” she replied.

“Is that relevant somehow?”

“No. Not really.”

Webb let out a chuckle from behind them.

“We didn’t take his stuff,” Zander said. “Honey is there watching the apartment in case he turns up, but I doubt he will.”

“Where are we? How far is it to your place? Where is it?”
