The house appears out of nowhere, my thoughts consuming me for the rest of the drive. When I punch in the code, and Will pulls up, he turns to face me.

“Be careful, Alexa,” he warns, then sighs. “Our home is yours to stay in whenever you need it. Don’t feel like you have to live here to prove a point to Lex, okay?”

I barely manage the nod, simply smiling while opening the door.

Amelia gazes at me with sympathy. “I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?”

Without another word, I exit the car and watch it drive off. As if I’m on autopilot, I open the main doors to darkness once again. Glancing at the roof, I wait for the lights to sense me and turn on, but they don’t.

Drawing my brows in confusion, my eyes immediately gaze upon Hunter standing at the foot of the large staircase in the dark.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” he says in a seductive tone.

“But, you never text—”

He walks toward me, keys jingling in his hand. Suddenly, he grabs my hand, gripping it tight.

“Let’s go,” he demands.

I’m walking fast to keep up with him. “Where are we going?”

Stopping mid-step, he turns to face me, cupping my chin in his hand. My breathing grows faster and more audible until he leans down and places his lips on mine.

“To do what we’ve both been waiting for,” Hunter murmurs. “But not here. My penthouse because I need you naked all night long.”

TWENTY-ONE

HUNTER

Alexandra Edwards.

How the name ignites a fire within me, one I haven’t been able to control since the moment April asked for her to stay at the house.

You’d be a fool not to know who Lex Edwards is, and despite me knowing everything about the mogul, I’d not made an effort to learn anything about his family.

Of course, I knew he was married and had daughters. I only knew the oldest was married to Will Romano, but that was it. When it comes to family, I don’t really give a shit. I barely had any of my own, and the ones who did call themselves family only wanted one thing from me.

Money.

That’s all people have wanted from me my whole life. My parents were killed in a car accident when I was five, leaving me to be raised by my grandfather. He was the patriarch of the family, and everyone knew he would leave his fortune to his only grandchild.

With a condition, of course.

He didn’t want me to be lonely, like him, so the condition was to marry someone, and the family's estate and holdings were mine.

I was given no choice.

Not when hungry thieves were waiting to get their hands on it.

Marrying Kathy was easy, she wanted money, and I had plenty of it. At the time, it didn’t bother me she had a daughter. We had an agreement: she could live in the house and do whatever the hell she wants, and I’ll keep my penthouse to live in. If the situation called for it, to keep up appearances, I did have a room in the house.

Our marriage is purely of convenience. With an unlimited Amex, Kathy has no interest in what I do with my life, just like I have no interest in hers. Spend all the money you want, just leave me the fuck alone.

It was all working fine until Alexandra Edwards came to stay.

I’d barely been staying at the house, but curiosity got the better of me, and one night I saw her come back home. Not wanting to introduce myself, I stayed behind the pillar inside the foyer and watched her creep into her room.

It was dark, so I barely caught a glimpse of her, but then April begged me to hire her.
