He frowned. “No. I told you, I sent my apologies.”
“But you have been re-invited now, yes?” She clenched her hands together tightly. “I know your father was here, Drew. I know you quarreled and you’ve said nothing at all about his visit.”
“What he said was not important.”
She stared at him, saddened that he would lie in an attempt to spare her feelings. She was entirely to blame for today’s threats. “Is that the truth? Don’t bother answering me with more lies. I heard everything you didn’t want me to know very clearly today. You know what you have to do, even if you don’t like it.”
Drew held out his hands to Aurora, but she wouldn’t take them.
He let his hands fall. “All right. All right. Everything is not fine with my father. I only wanted to protect you from the unpleasantness of his call. Family pressure to remarry continues.”
“You must be seen to court one of Northport’s choices to keep him happy,” Aurora said sadly. “And marry them quickly to keep your inheritance, too.”
