“Doesn’t it look like it has.” He glances at Jade then back to the wine bottle he’s applying the label to.

“So what, Lucas?”

I look at Jade, confused. I have no idea what the hell she’s talking about.

“So what, Lucas?” Jade repeats.

“Okay, Jade, I’m not sure if it’s a question or a comment, and obviously, you’ve been drinking—”

“So what? What are you? The fun police?” Jade laughs at her lame-ass comment, and Tessa does, too.

“Is this a trick question?”

They both laugh harder.

Typically, I would have said something over-the-top. perverted or suggestive. You know, put ’em on their asses with naughty. But not now.

Jade grabs her and Tessa’s empty glasses and walks into the kitchen. She turns on some music then walks back in to the beat of the music. Then she starts swaying her hips and backs her ass up and sits on Ryan’s lap.

“Hey, Jade.” He smiles.

“Don’t smile at me like that. I’m not that drunk.”

She and Tessa laugh again.

“What are you? The ass police?” I ask her.

They all laugh, and then my motherfucking phone chimes. Yeah, that one, the wicked witch’s damn anthem.

I look quickly at Tessa, whose eyes widen and her mouth forms a perfectO. I then look across the table at Jade’s phone sitting there. I look back at Tessa, pretty damn sure I’m busted, and she starts laughing as she stands up and walks into the kitchen.

“What’s so funny?”

Oh fuck.

“Jade, please just go with it. Please,” I plead.

“Fuck that. What’s so funny?” Jade laughs as Tessa walks back in.

“Busted, Lucas. You better come clean.” Tessa pats my head then sits with her legs tucked under her in the chair next to me. “When she goes after you, don’t worry. I got your back, buddy.”

“Spill it, Links.” Jade drinks down her wine and looks at me impatiently.

“His ringtone for you.”

“Tessa, please don’t—”

“It’s the wicked witch. You know, when she rides her bike into the farm and—”

I lock eyes with Jade, ready to do battle. She reaches for her phone and looks at me, confused.

I close my eyes and mouth, “please,” to Jade.

“I’m the wicked witch?” Jade asks.

“No, Jade, you’re not—”

“I’m the wicked witch!” Jade stands up.
