He leveled his brown eyes on me. “I want to be here. Besides, Luke will want an update soon. Can’t do that if I don’t have information to provide.”

He turned his attention to the world outside the window and waited patiently for the doctor to come in.

I sighed. It was beyond me why he continued to stay. Even after I tried to make him leave, he refused. I gave up. It was far better to have him with me than to fight and feel even worse. I probably would have wished he stayed if he left anyway.

“Still reminds me of a resort more than a hospital,” he said after several minutes of silence.

I smirked. “I wouldn’t know. This is the only hospital I’ve ever known.”

He nodded and stared at a spot on the floor. “I suppose I can understand that.”

We fell into our thoughts. He was silent while I listened to the sounds coming from outside the door. I was keeping my ears peeled for any hint of the doctor coming in. After several moments I decided to lay back on the bed. My eyes were growing heavy, and it was becoming harder to stay awake.

Just when I was about to give in and catch a little sleep, Guy’s voice alerted me. “We weren’t a mistake.”

“What?” I asked groggily, settling my half-asleep gaze on him.

“You and I were never a mistake,” he said, holding me with his eyes. “What we did wasn’t a mistake.”

“What brought this on?” I asked, confused.

“You have been avoiding me. Ever since that day you have said very little to me. Cassidy and I were never dating…” he trailed off until he settled his saddened gaze on me. “You and I weren’t a mistake.”

“I know,” I said with a smile. “Cassidy told me everything.”

“Why do you still avoid me then?” he asked.

I shrugged. “Because I still don’t know if I can trust you. You hid something small from me, so what is to stop you from hiding something bigger?”

“What did I hide from you, Cadence?” he asked. There was a desperation to his voice.

“That you were friends with a woman…” I admitted shamefully.

“So?” he asked. “You’re friends with guys.”

“That’s different,” I said. I was becoming defensive, and I wasn’t really sure why.

He shook his head. “When will you realize that from the moment I met you, you were all I could think about? You became the center of my gravity and the only thing holding me to this Earth.”

I sucked in a breath and held it. My heart palpitated. I didn’t know what to say. I wasn’t sure what to think. I certainly wasn’t expecting him to say something like that to me.

I couldn’t even be positive he had just said those words to me for sure. But he met my gaze, and he held me under the weight of his soft, kind brown eyes.

GUY

Before she could say anything in response to what I had said to her, there was a knock at the door. Seconds later, the doctor walked into the room.

He nodded at each of us in greeting and took a seat on his little circular stool. He fiddled through her paperwork and then cleared his throat. “Miss Cadence, it’s a pleasure to meet you. So, tell me when was your last period?”

I turned my attention to Cadence as she shrugged. They were focusing really heavily on all of that. “I wasn’t sexually active, so I never kept track of it. I think it’s coming due though.”

The doctor nodded. The man had thin white hair encircling a bald spot situated at the crown of his head. Every time he moved his head the light above his head reflected off his skin and caught my attention. He flashed his gaze toward me. He also seemed to have a permanent frown… either that or he was accusing me of something. I could almost see the judgment in his eyes as he glanced at me before returning his attention to Cadence. “You never had sex before?”

She shook her head. Her cheeks took on the most color I’ve seen them have all night. “I’ve only had sex once. And that was about a month ago.”

She flicked her gaze toward me. It was a quick look. Almost like she was embarrassed to talk about sex in front of me… or maybe it was the doctor.
