I shrugged. “I don’t think so.”

“You hungry?” He asked. ‘

I laughed. “Are we playing twenty questions?”

He chuckled and squeezed me to him. “Maybe. You’re falling behind.”

We fell into a comfortable silence, holding onto each other until our stomachs protested waiting longer for food. And I spent the rest of the night feeling whole and strangely complete.

Not to mention, ready for round two.

GUY

During the early morning hours, sometime after Cadence had fallen into a deep sleep, I climbed out of bed and headed downstairs. The chill in the cabin had sunk deep into my bones, making it difficult to stay asleep. Plus, I was somehow energized by the sex we had. I didn’t want to sleep. I had too much energy inside me for that. But being so wrapped up in Cadence, I had forgotten all about the fire. She had captured my attention so completely that everything else in the world had faded away.

It was just me and her. Nothing else mattered.

I tossed a few logs onto the grate and then set them ablaze. Heat exploded from the new fire, pushing back the icy chill that had settled on the air. Then I headed to the window to get a look at the damage the storm had done. My truck and Cadence’s car were covered with a thick layer of snow. The snow had blown up onto the porch as well. Everywhere my eyes settled, it seemed there was a good three to four inches of snow. And though it wasn’t actively snowing anymore, the skies above still looked dark and angry. We weren’t on the other side of this yet.

I took a seat on the couch and stared at the fire as the flames turned from orange to yellow with white tips and red embers and waited for the house to warm fully.

As I sat, I wondered what I was going to do with myself now that I had a taste of Cadence. Though at first, I thought it was wrong to take her virginity away from her, I didn’t regret doing so. It felt right. She felt right. And now that I had slept with her, there was no way in heaven, hell, or anywhere in between, that I was going to let her go.

Because I had finally found her.

I had finally found my mate.

Even with as much as I was sure about Cadence, I still felt unsettled. It wasn’t in stealing her virginity away. It was in something I couldn’t put my finger on. And try as I might to figure it out, it was no use.

Once I checked the time, I decided to give Cassidy a call. She would be awake. Besides, she owed me an explanation for the reason why she had blown up my phone the way she did, but I could also use some of her advice. Not only that but, she probably needed to know about Cadence. Maybe this was the final thing I had to have for a little closure between us.

I stood and pulled my phone out of the front pocket of my jeans. As I scrolled through my contacts for Cassidy’s new number, I headed into the kitchen. I was feeling a bit hungry and figured Cadence could use a hot meal once she woke up.

As the line rang, I pulled out more bacon, sausage, and eggs, and I grabbed out the butter from the fridge. Then I pulled out the mushrooms before heading to the cabinet where the bread was kept, pulling it out.

“Hi, you’ve reached my voice mail,” Cassidy’s voice filtered over the line. “You know what to do.”

I sighed as the beep pierced my ears. “It’s me. Need to talk. Call me back.”

I ended the call and finished collecting the rest of everything I needed. No sooner than the bacon started to sizzle, Cassidy called back.

I quickly answered the phone. “Hey.”

“It’s about damn time you answer the phone when I call,” she said, her voice sounding playful.

I arched an eyebrow. “You’re certainly perky this morning. And I find it amazing that you know how to return a phone call.”

“Yeah… about that,” she started. Several seconds later. “Look, I’m sorry. Things have been really weird for me lately.”

I flipped the bacon and took a step back, leaning against the counter opposite from the stove. “What do you mean?”

“Nothing. I’ll tell you later. So, what’s up?” she asked. “You mentioned you needed to talk?”

“Why do you keep doing that?” I asked, spotting some potatoes. I decided they would go fabulously with the omelets, so I grabbed a couple of them.

“Doing what?” her voice quickly rushed over the line.
