“Okay.”

Malcolm searched my face for any signs of deceit—which he wouldn’t find. I was one hundred percent telling Luca someone was watching me.

Dipping his chin, he tapped the top of my desk. “I guess I’ll head out then.”

“Not a word to Ash.” I rushed out.

He stopped with his hand on the door handle and looked over his shoulder. “Obviously. She’s just now getting over the fact you’re marrying into the mob. I don’t expect she’d appreciate you having a stalker.”

“Have I told you how much I love you two together?”

He gave me a blinding smile. “Not today.”

I laughed and shook my head. “Get out of here before Frankie or Ashley catches you.”

Malcolm slipped out, and I took a steadying breath, shoving the folder in a drawer. Snagging a stack of old notes, I fed them into the shredder sheet by sheet. The buzzing soothed me in the way only office machinery could.

“You’re shredding without me?” Frankie’s voice startled me, and I spun my chair around.

“Sorry, I forgot you’re eight.”

He covered his heart with his hand, his face blank as ever. “Ouch.”

“If it’ll make you feel better, you can shred the documents Miranda digitized last week.”

Frankie spread out on the couch and tilted his head toward the door. “What’d the giant want?”

“Tips for Ashley’s birthday present. He’s going all out.”

Frankie’s eyes narrowed as he studied me. “I have to head out of town for a few days. Pete’s picking you up and taking you home, and the Marino twins will be your protection until I get back.”

“Two for the price of one?”

“Between the two of them, they should be able to bring you to work and back with no problems.”

“If you say so.”

He leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. “You planning on causing trouble?”

“Never.” I glanced at my phone, seeing a missed call from Luca. “When do you leave?”

“Now. Luca should be here in a few.”

“Wow. Personal protection courtesy of the boss? I’m a lucky girl.”

“No arguments here.”

I answered a couple of emails, hoping I’d get a little time with Luca before he left. As if my thoughts conjured him, Luca stood in the doorway in his black tailored suit, looking like a dark angel. “You can go. I’ve got it from here.”

Frankie got up to leave, and I yelled out, “Have a safe trip!”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” he said as he walked around Luca and out of my office.

“He’s just so chatty.”

“It’s why he’s your bodyguard.” Luca grinned.

“Is that jealousy?”
