Enzo arches a brow. “What plan?”

I shrug. “A plan to lure Adrik into a trap. I don’t know the details.”

Thiago punches Enzo in the shoulder hard. “Stop being a fucking asshole and let her sit down.” He places a hand on my shoulder and guides me toward a leather sofa in the corner. “Lila said she spoke to you a few days ago.”

I nod in response. “Yeah, Adrik didn’t know about the key in the vase for the study, so when he was out I used it and broke in to use the telephone. All the other phones are behind locked door, and he took my cell phone.” I shake my head. “It’s like I’m a prisoner in our house.”

Thiago nods slowly, a look of guilt in his eyes. “I’m sorry I didn’t protect you from him.”

“How could you have? He had everyone fooled, including Papá.” I swallow hard and pause for a few moments before asking, “Where is he buried?”

“The family mausoleum at Rosehill.” Thiago takes my hand and squeezes. “We’ll take you there when all of this is over, okay?”

“Thank you,” I say, pain constricting at my throat. “It’s been impossible to consider grieving while dealing with him.” I meet Thiago’s gaze. “The man is crazy and ruthless beyond compare.”

Thiago arches a brow. “More ruthless than Enzo?”

I nod in reply, glancing at my younger brother, who is leaning against the desk with narrowed eyes. He doesn’t trust me and, to be honest; I don’t blame him. I’m not entirely sure he should.

“There’s something you should know,” I say, my brow furrowing. “I’m pregnant.”

“Motherfucker,” Thiago says. “I’ll kill him.”

“Exactly the reason not to trust her, brother. She’s carrying that bastard’s heir.”

I glare at Enzo as although I feel torn over where my loyalties should lie, he’s acting as if this is my fault. “Do you think I asked to be forced down the aisle at gunpoint and then taken against my will by Adrik Volkov?”

Enzo’s jaw clenches and finally the tension eases from his shoulders. “I’m sorry. I’m being an asshole.”

“Yeah, you are,” Thiago says, shaking his head. “None of this was Eliza’s fault.” He glances at me. “Do you want to keep the baby?”

If he’s asked me that two weeks ago, I would have said no. I was ready to get to a clinic as fast as possible before Adrik even knew the baby existed, but I can’t help but feel it would hurt too much to get rid of him or her. “I can’t imagine having an abortion, if that’s what you’re suggesting.” I set my hand on my stomach. “The baby maybe his, but it won’t be anything like him.”

“No, because you are the baby’s mom and you won’t let him or her grow up like that.” Thiago stands, walking toward the window. “It complicates things, though.”

“Complicates things, how?”

“I’ve been in contact with Don Pablo. He said as long as there’s no heir, he’ll back my claim to the crown.” There’s a dark look in his eyes, one which sends a shiver down my spine. “You can’t be very far along, so I doubt it’ll be a problem. We’ll keep it between us. Who else knows?”

“Adrik knows, of course, and Lila. I told her on the phone the other day.”

“Shit,” Enzo says, running a hand across the back of his neck. “Lila is a bloody motormouth, and she hangs out with all the Mexicans at the academy. It’s bound to get back to Pablo sooner rather than later.”

My brow furrows. “I doubt it, if she didn’t tell you two when she told you we’d spoken.”

“True,” Thiago says, grabbing the phone on the desk. “I’ll call her and ask her to keep it to herself.” He dials Lila’s number and puts her on speakerphone. She picks up on the third tone.

“Hello.”

“Hey Lila, it’s Thiago and I’m here with Enzo and Eliza.”

“What? How is Eliza with you?” She sounds like she’s in shock on the other end of the phone. “You better not be playing a cruel joke on me.”

“He’s not, I’m here,” I say.

She squeals. “Thank God. They saved you.”

Guilt coils through me, as I don’t feel half as elated as she sounds.
