He dipped his head with a chuckle before shifting the stethoscope into his ears. “Would you mind loosening your shirt a little?”

My eyebrows rose.

“To check your lungs,” he added, holding back his amusement.

“Oh…okay.” I untucked my shirt.

“This may be a little cold at first.” He slipped his hand under my shirt and hovered millimeters over my breast as he listened.

“I told you I was fine,” I said, trying to cover the hammering of my heart that was surely deafening him.

His eyes traveled to mine, searching. “That you are.”

A throat clearing from the open doorway snapped the building tension.

“Oh…hey, Adam,” I stammered as Marc removed his hand.

“Cassidy.” His expressionless gaze panned to Marc. “Doctor Morrison.”

“Hello, Adam.” Marc wound up his stethoscope as he stood. “You appear perfectly fine, Cassidy.”

My hands trembled as I fastened the buttons of my shirt. “Marc was just giving me a checku—” My lame excuse was shut down by the door slamming across the hall.

“Adam’s not one for small talk, is he?” Marc said as he packed his things away.

I smiled tightly. “No.”

“Well, if you ever need more conversation while you’re here, I’d love to take you out sometime.”

“Oh…” My gaze floated to Adam’s door before meeting Marc’s hopeful gaze. “We probably shouldn’t…I mean, with Liam…and well…I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

He pressed his lips together as he stood. “You’re right. I’ve overstepped.”

“No, no…” I followed him to the door. “You didn’t. I’m just…not in a position to think about myself right now.”

“Well, when you are…” He smiled. “You have my number.”

“I do.”

He gave my forearm a squeeze before continuing down the hall, leaving me standing there, staring at Adam’s door.

As if sensing my presence, or waiting for Marc to leave, Adam threw open his door. “I thought there was nothing going on between you two?”

I turned away from his impenetrable gaze. “There isn’t.”

“His hand was up your shirt.”

“He was checking my lungs!” I cried, entirely too defensive.

Adam’s eyes lowered to my chest. “Your nipples say otherwise.”

“He grazed them, so what?” Heat rose up my neck as I folded my arms, hiding the evidence. “It’s been a while—not like you’d understand.”

He stepped into the hall. “You have no fucking idea how much I understand.”

I bit the inside of my cheek, but there was no stopping my mouth. “Like you haven’t been seeing other women back in LA?”

“Other women?” He leaned forward. “That would mean I already have one.”
