“I snuck out as soon as we announced the award.”
“But what about Staci? Won’t she be looking for you?”
Adam grasped my elbows. “Cass, I never intended to go with her. She turned up at my house unannounced, and since we were going to the same function, I figured it would be okay. Plus, a small part of me hoped it would make you jealous.”
I folded my arms as I focused on the patchy grass under my feet. “It did.”
“And it felt worse than I imagined.” He lifted my chin. “I’m sorry.”
Entranced by his oceanic eyes, I drew closer. His lips beckoned mine, but a glass breaking in the house snapped me out of my trance. With a gasp, I stepped back, scanning for witnesses. “Not here.” I panned my gaze around the small circles of rubbernecking guests. “You’re drawing too much attention.”
Adam scoffed. “Then, let’s go.”
My pulse quickened as my head and heart prepared for battle. “I was planning to stay here tonight…with Finn.”
“Change your plans.”
“But I’ll miss the fireworks.
His dark eyes never left mine. “I assure you, you won’t.”
I bit my lower lip as I peeked over at Tash, who was whispering with Bryce while watching us from the punch bowl.
“Fine.” I sighed, growing tired of the prying eyes. “I’ll meet you out front in five. I have to check on Finn.”
With a nod, Adam pulled out his cell and began texting as he sauntered away. Multiple sets of eyes followed him, then panned back to me with curiosity, including my sister-in-law.
“I’m going to head off,” I said to Tash after finding my son fast asleep in Tristan’s room.
“Withhim?”
I flinched. “Don’t say it like that.”
“Cass, I don’t think it’s a good idea. When Bryce found out who he was, he told me—”
“I don’t want to hear anymore rumors, Tash. I want to have a little fun for once. Just likeyoutold me to.”
“But that was before.”
“Before what?”
She closed her eyes and sighed. “Look, is it just a bit of fun, or is it something more serious? Because the way he looks at you…"
“You’re reading too much into it,” I said, cutting her off. “How could it be any more? It’s AdamFreakin’Harlow, remember?”
Uncertainty plagued her chocolate eyes. “I want you to be careful, Cass.”
“You make it sound like I’m getting into bed with the devil.”
“Well…maybe you are.”
My temper sparked. “Well…maybe I want to!”
“Okay, okay.” She held up her hands. “I’m just trying to look out for you…for Dom.”
“I know, and I love you for that, but it’s time I stop playing it safe and live a little. Life’s too short.”
Tears crept into her eyes. “It sure is.”
