Annika giggled.

Tim chuckled.

And slowly, I relaxed.

It dawned on me then that it was Annika’s presence, and probably Tim’s too, that helped me relax with Harley. I wouldn’t be able to do this without either of them. And certainly not alone.

Harley squirmed impatiently, trying to press closer. Tim met my gaze. “Should I let him closer?”

I drew in a deep breath. Exhaled.

Prepared myself for the dog’s close proximity.

“Yeah.”

Tim eased his grip on the leash, and Harley pressed his face into my lap. I kept petting him, deciding the feel of his soft fur was comforting. The dog reveled in my touch, his tail wagging, then suddenly reared up and licked my face.

I froze, expecting a flashback to hit me.

But nothing happened.

Tim hauled him back. “Sorry. He’s fast.”

Annika’s concerned gaze searched mine. “You okay?”

I gulped. Was I? “Yeah. I’m fine.” And I was.I’m fine. This isn’t so bad.

She sent me a tender smile. “Good. Is that enough for one day?”

I hesitated, my hand still buried in Harley’s soft fur. Harley’s tongue swept out again, aiming for my face. This time, I didn’t freeze. I closed my eyes and let him lick me.

It doesn’t hurt. It tickles. It’s sloppy.

I’m okay.

Laughing softly, I pushed Harley back. “Down,” I ordered.

Harley plopped his butt on the floor, his tail wagging, and eyed me excitedly.

“Okay.” I glanced at Tim. “That’s enough for one day.”

“Harley, come.” With a quick jerk on the leash, Tim led the dog from the room.

I glanced at Annika to see her smiling wide. “You didamazing, Adrik. I’m impressed. It took me a lot longer to get over my own trauma.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. I was far from over it. “That was only the first attempt. Honestly, your presence helped me relax. Yours and Tim’s.”

Her eyes warmed. “I’m glad.”

Tim returned, his gaze roaming over us. His lips twitched, his eyes twinkling. “Well, my shift is officially over in approximately three minutes. Though I’d love to hang with you two, I need sleep. By the way, boss man said new soldiers will be arriving tomorrow. They’ll be leaving first thin in the morning.” He sent me an apologetic look. “But who knows, if they see you’re working on your phobia, maybe they’ll let you stay.” He grinned. “Adrik, take good care of Miss Annika, and I’ll see you both in about eight hours.”

He winked at Annika, then left the room, humming softly.

I glanced at Annika.

She stared back at me.

Something shifted in the air. Crackling between us. It was subtle. But still discernable. Did she feel it, too?
