It will be great to have another baby, and I’m entirely on board.

“How long will it take… to get pregnant, I mean?” I ask.

“I guess not too long.” Sarah shrugs. “We got pregnant with Ethan without trying, so I can assume it won’t take too long once ‘the pill’ is out of my system.”

I love Sarah so much, and I’d do anything to make her happy. So, if she wants another baby, then that’s what I’m going to give her.

“Well, then, let’s get cracking,” I chime.

She laughs and turns off the television.

I bend and lift her over my shoulder and walk us to our bedroom.

I wake with a start to my phone ringing. Sarah groans loudly and covers her head with a pillow. I look over, and Aiden’s name is flashing.

“Dude, it’s like three in the morning! Are you guys okay?” I ask.

“Jeni’s gone into labor, and I’m… freaking out, man,” Aiden says quietly but sounding shit scared.

“Jeni’s in labor? How long ago did it start?”

Sarah uncovers her face and looks at me excitedly.

“She was having back pain last night, and she said she couldn’t sleep so she went to have a bath. I stayed in bed ‘cause, you know, it was like one o’clock. But then I heard her moaning, so I raced in there, and she was hunched over in pain. I mean what kind of husband does that? Lets his pregnant wife go to the bathroom alone while he sleeps in bed. I’m a fucking jerk, Chris,” Aiden rambles on and on.

“You’re not a jerk. Jeni knows how much you love her. Calm the fuck down and stop talking to me and go be with her. You need to hold her hand. I’m not going to lie, dude, i

t’s gonna scare the shit out of you. But you have to be strong and support Jeni. Whatever she needs. Oh, and don’t take it to heart when she tells you that she hates you and screams expletives at you…” I laugh. “It’s just the pain talking.”

“I hate seeing her in pain. I’m so weak when it comes to Jeni,” he mumbles.

“Aiden, pull yourself together. She needs you, and you have to grin and bear it. It’s gonna suck, but dude, if I can do it, you definitely can. Now, shut the fuck up and go back in there. Where are you now?”

“Just arrived at the hospital. They’re hooking stuff up to her… you know, monitors and shit. She sent me out to get Skittles,” he says with a slight chuckle.

“Skittles?”

“Yeah, trust her to want something weird while she’s in labor. Oh, hey, I gotta go, they’re calling me,” he announces and then ends the call.

I laugh and put the cell down on the bed.

“So, how far along is she?” Sarah looks ecstatic.

“Umm… I’m not sure, he never actually said, but he’s all over the place. Believe me, I know how hard it is.”

Sarah slaps me on the arm. “Are you kidding me? How hard it is for you? What about the mother who has to push a watermelon out their va jay jay? You think the father’s task is harder than the mother’s?”

“No, baby, I know women have it way tougher, but think what it’d be like if the roles were reversed. It’s the scariest fucking thing you’ll ever see as a man… watching the woman you’re madly in love with in so much pain. It’s shit, but, of course, you have it worse,” I explain while she nods.

“Just think, that will be us again soon… I hope,” she mumbles, running circles on my chest with her finger.

I smile and kiss her head. “And are you prepared to go through all that pain again?”

“In a heartbeat,” she confirms.

“I love you.”

“I love you, too. Seeing as we’re now both wide awake, and Ethan is fast asleep, and we are on the topic of babies, I think we should try as often as we can… if you know what I mean,” she insinuates and raises her eyebrows up and down.
