“It’s too much.”
He wrapped his arms around her. “Are you happy?”
“Yes, very much.”
“Then it was definitely worth it.”
“You know I would have been just as happy with you and only you.”
“Damn, you’re sweet.” He bent and pressed his lips against hers. It deepened quickly until they were both ravished and holding on to each other.
He ripped his mouth from hers. “We need to stop. We have groceries to buy and lunch to make in the next hour or so. I want our first time to be when we’re in bed for the night because I will want to hold you for a very long time.”
She smiled. “I’d like that, too.”
“Good. Let’s go.”
He took her hand, led her into his office, sat in his chair, and pulled her into his lap. They spent the next hour buying the groceries they’d need for the week.
“Hey, I’ve got some calls to make. Do you want to stay in here and read on the sofa or go watch TV in the living room?”
“I’d like to read in here.”
“Good. I’ve got some books here. We’ll order some tomorrow or later today if you don’t like any of them.”
“These will work. I see several authors that I enjoy.”
“Good. Go get comfortable. This shouldn’t take me long.”
“Okay.”
He watched as she picked out a book and got comfortable on the sofa before getting some work done.
The next time he looked at the clock, close to two hours had passed.
“Hey, baby girl. Are you at a good page to stop at? I’d like us to make lunch.”
“Yes.” She looked at the page in the book she was on and set it down on the sofa table.
Later that day, after they’d put away the groceries they ordered, they sat together on the sofa, watching a movie, when the phone rang.
“How about you go in and get ready for bed? I want you to wear what I laid out on the mattress.”
“Okay.”
He lifted her onto her feet and watched her walk away before answering his phone.
“Hey, man,” Jonah said. “I called to tell you that there has been an FBI investigation on Jones for over a year.”
“Fuck. Do they realize how many women have gone missing just in this year alone?” Nolan asked.
“Yes. But they have to do this by the book or he could walk.”
Nolan wiped a hand down his face. “Yeah, I realize that. It doesn’t make it easier to deal with.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“At least it’s a beginning, and they probably already have some evidence against him.”
