Wesley lives on his family’s ranch in Texas. I haven’t seen him in a few years. He had joined the military right out of high school and just moved back to the states a few months ago.
I had met Wesley and the rest of the Kings on the bull riding circuit. His older brother, Deacon, and I were fierce competitors but also close friends. I became friends with all of them through Deacon and we’ve stayed close over the years.
“Let me know when you’re here. We can grab dinner or something. Is Deacon coming with you?” I ask.
“Yeah. Jax and Arlowe will stay here and run the ranch while we’re gone.”
“How’s everyone doing?”
“Good. We had a friend move back recently so Arlowe is happy. I don’t know if you ever met Harvie?”
“Sounds familiar. Redhead? Her and Arlowe were always attached at the hip, right?”
“That’s the one. She moved back and married a military friend of mine.”
“That’s cool.”
“Yeah, it was good to see her. I know that Arlowe was missing her.”
“What about you?” I ask, and I can practically see him shrugging.
“Same old,” he says.
“Don’t believe him!” Jax, his other brother, yells in the background, and I grin.
“What are you not telling me?”
“Nothing. Jax is an idiot.”
“He’s in love,” Jax yells, drawing out the word love.
He gets cut off with a grunt, and I know that Wesley just hit him. I chuckle as I listen to the two scuffle, and then Wesley comes back, sounding slightly out of breath.
“Sorry about that.”
“Who’s the lucky girl?” I ask.
“Not you, too,” he groans.
I just laugh, and he sighs.
“Her name is Blake. She lives on the farm next to ours. I’ve just run into her a few times, and Jax is an idiot who loves teasing me.”
“Uh huh,” I say, not at all convinced.
“Shut up. Kai told me all about you and your Gwen. What happened there?” He asks, and I wince.
“I may have… messed it all up.”
“How?” he asks. I lean back against the counter, sighing.
“We slept together, and then… I don’t know. Things were all weird the next day.”
“So, fix it.”
“I wish I could,” I mumble.
“You can, idiot. Just go talk to her!”
