Maybe if she knew, she wouldn’t be interested in dating him.

The more he’d thought about it, the more it made sense tohim.

But every time he’d tried putting it into words, he couldn’t.

Explaining why he needed to keep his head clear was more difficult than he’d imagined. And he’d had a hard time explaining his thoughts his entire life. But this little issue was deeply personal.

And impossible to describe.

But this was Sabine.

Maybe she’d understand.

Maybe he’d tell her next time.

CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE

WHAT A MAN GOTTA DO

SABINE

Dave stayed until she was yawning because it was way past her bedtime.

He kissed her forehead at the door and promised to see her the next day.

She would have protested him leaving if it hadn’t been a school night. But it was, and she was responsible for teaching children, so she needed her rest as much as they did.

Still, it was hard to say goodbye.

Especially when he’d been so great about everything.

She hadn’t meant to be crying when he’d shown up but sometimes emotions demanded to be felt. And her rejection letter had triggered a bunch of them.

And he hadn’t been scared off.

The opposite in fact.

So, when she saw him at the studio the very next afternoon before their second attempt at a date, she couldn’t stop smiling.

Piper noticed.

“My personal life is none of your business, Miss James,” Sabine said.

“Right.” Piper studied her for a beat. “If you guys have babies, will you please name your first born after me?”

Sabine’s mouth fell open.

“It’s only fair. You wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for me. I deserve some credit. Most of the credit. Actually, a trophy would do. A big one. Like they use for championships.” Piper packed up her laptop and zipped the bag shut.

Sabine shook her head. Piper smirked like only a teenager can, slung the bag over her shoulder, and left.

She passed Dave on her way out.

“You owe me big time,” Piper said over her shoulder.

“I’m sure I do,” Dave replied. “Send the bill to my manager.” He came into the lounge, spotted her, and smiled.

God, she loved that smile.
