“You are going to have to let me go,” she whispered in his ear. She hoped he could tell by the reluctance in her voice that leaving was the very last thing she wanted to do.
“Never,” he whispered back.
Her heart rate spiked and she wanted nothing more than to lean back into him and let him take her home. She wanted it more than she had ever wanted anything in the world.
“Are you going to kidnap me?”
“Yes. Kristin can come visit you at my house.” His answer was immediate.
She burst out laughing at that.
“I don’t think you want her there every day.”
“What if I wantyouthere…every day?”
Her hand had somehow made it to his cheek.
“You don’t even know me.”
“I would like to,” he said, gently leaning into her touch.
“You don’t even like me.”
“Oh, Sam.” He smiled and shook his head at her words. “You have absolutely no idea how much I do, in fact, like you.”
“You’re my boss.” She rubbed the stubble across his jaw and swore she felt his entire body tense.
His words were a whisper in her ear. “You’re fired. There. Problem averted.”
She burst out laughing again and then took a steadying breath.
“There is still one tiny problem.”
He brought his lips right next to hers. “And what is that?”
She let her lips graze his cheek as she moved to his ear. “I have sworn to loathe you for all eternity,” she whispered, letting her lips tickle his skin as she spoke. He tensed further and she knew he was holding in the moan that threatened to escape.
“As long as you are loathing me while still perched on my lap, I’ll take it,” he offered.
She swatted his arm at that. He quickly grasped it, bringing her fingers to his lips, and placed a kiss on the pad of each one.
“You have no idea what effect you have on me, do you?” he asked.
She wasn’t sure how to respond to that statement other than a shy smile. He made her so nervous, yet excited, mad, and then scared all at once. It was like her brain couldn’t figure out which emotion it wanted or needed to feel.
“I’ve got to go,” she said one last time.
If he didn’t let her go this time, she knew her resolve would falter and she would follow him anywhere.
“I’ll see you at work then,” he said as he dropped his hands from around her.
“Bye, Callum.”
“Bye, Sam.”
Chapter 16 - Sam
Sam didn’t even remember driving home. She was on autopilot the entire time.
