“I’m glad you are.”

She sighed and shook out her hands. “We need to talk, and I don’t know how to start.”

“We’re already talking.” Shit, those four words nearly had me doubling over:we need to talk. They were the most dreaded words for any dude to hear.

“I know, but this is easy.”

“Just say it.”

“I’m trying to.”

“Say it.” I braced for it.

“I’m pregnant.”

“I didn’t expect that.” I stared at her. “How is that possible?”

“Really? No one told you about the birds and the bees.”

“You said you were on birth control. I distinctly recall the conversation we had.”

“Oh sure, the two-second convo at Ted’s when we were already naked?”

“Yes, that one.”

“I was afraid you’d reject me if I said no. I thought it was a one-time hookup. I never thought we’d end up… I don’t know, whatever we are, were, are.”

I had no words. Pregnant? Well, I’d forever be bound to her.

“When I asked you to put on a condom, you said no because you already had me bare. Do you remember that?”

“I remember.”

“That’s it?”

“What do you want me to say? I’m a little shocked right now.”

“Well, you don’t have to worry because I’ll take care of my kid.”

“It’s my kid too, Brynne.” I went and sat in front of her. “I will take care of both of you. I still love you, even if you hate my guts.”

“I don’t hate you. I just don’t know if—”

“If you love me? Is it really that easy to fall out of love?”

“When the person you loved betrays you, I think so.”

“Baby, you hurt me so much.”

“Yeah, it’s not a pleasant feeling.” She put her hands together like she was about to pray. “Promise me you won’t make things weird in Minnesota.”

“What does that mean?”

“My mom told me how you’re a biker and about the club girls. You’re free to do as you please, but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t get down and dirty around me.”

I got up and walked to the door.

“Track?” she called my road name, and it set me off.
