The news would destroy him, and I didn’t think he could come back from it.

Track

I was in the kitchen when Tina shuffled in. We hadn’t really spoken to each other. It’d been three days since she was reunited with Brynne, and they spent every waking hour together.

They’d been three fucking torturous days that I hadn’t seen my Bonita. But I was happy for them.

In a couple of hours, we were leaving the compound and returning to Minnesota. My dad had told me Brynne had agreed to come. She hadn’t said anything about me.

“Good morning, Track.” Tina poured herself some juice.

“Morning.” I rinsed out my coffee cup and loaded it into the dishwasher.

“She’s doing better.”

“I’m glad.” I went to leave, but she placed her hand on my arm and stopped me.

“She’s ready to talk to you. But there’s a lot to work through. She feels like she doesn’t know you.”

“She does know me. I only hid the truth about you. I gave her all of me.” I hit my hand on my chest.

“I’m sure you did.” She smiled softly. “I even have to get used to the idea of you and Brynne together.”

“I love her, Tina.” I stared into her eyes. “I’m going nuts not being able to see or talk to her.”

“Then, go talk to her. Just go easy on her, okay?”

“I will never hurt her again.”

“I hope not.” She pushed me along. “Go. She’s waiting for you.”

I didn’t waste a second and took the stairs two at a time. My freaking heart rate shot through the roof. Tina had given nothing away about what Brynne would tell me.

It couldn’t be that bad, then. Or could it?

Only one way to find out. I knocked and wiped my sweaty palms on my jeans.

“Come in.”

I opened the door and found her sitting crisscrossed on the bed. Her hair was piled on her head in a messy bun, and she wore shorts and an oversized T-shirt.

She was gorgeous, the most beautiful woman on the planet.

“Hey,” she said.

“Hey.” I stayed by the door, not quite sure what to do. “Um, Tina said you’re doing better.”

“Mhm.” She bobbed her head. “We’ve been catching up.”

“Good. That’s good.”

“How’ve you been?”

“Oh, y’know, this and that.” I scratched the back of my head. “Packing to head back to Minnesota.”

“Yeah. I’m sure you know I’m going too.”
