“Let me get you some breakfast.” She got a plate and filled it.
Maddox bent and whispered in her ear as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. He and his twin, Markey, were night and day different. Maddox was the hothead, while Markey was the level-headed, slow-to-react one. Both boys were protective of Eve but showed it in different ways.
“What’s that about? It better not have anything to do with you.” Wolf’s growly voice pulled my attention away from my woman.
My woman.
Eve was mine even though she continued to push me away, convinced nobody would approve of us being together. I better not be setting myself up for some major heartbreak.
“No, it’s not about me,” I lied. “I don’t know what’s going on.”
He grunted. “I don’t believe you. Not after the other night.”
“Say no more,” I hissed.
“I need to do one last check on my hog before leaving.” He stood. “Don’t forget what I told you.”
I hadn’t forgotten how he called me a dead man. I rose from my chair. “I’ll go with.” On my way out, Eve glanced at me. Our eyes met for a brief second, just long enough to feel how much she cared about me.
Typically, any run we did could be dangerous. Any one of us could be killed if things went to shit.
Maybe death would be a blessing in disguise. Eve’s wish would come true because I’d be gone and not after her to give us a shot. Then I wouldn’t live in agony being without the woman I loved.
My death could be a win for both of us.
Angsty much, Art?

Sugar
After Storm and his crew left, I ran upstairs to change. The Fallen Soldier’s clubhouse was two and half hours away. If I wanted to be home before Art and the others, I had to hit the road fast.
I wasn’t sure what had possessed me to put on a denim skirt and off-the-shoulder blouse. Dressing up wasn’t something I did often, but I liked to look pretty when I went to Mason City, Iowa.
I hurried down the stairs, careful not to trip in my heels.
“Going somewhere, Sugar?” Grizzly asked at the bottom of the stairs.
“Uh-huh, spa day. Storm already knows.”
“Before you go, can I see your cell phone?”
I stopped, wholly taken aback. “What for?”
He reached his large hand out. “I just need to check something.”
“Check what? To see if my tracker is on.”
Grizzly pushed his long hair away from his face. “Yes.”
I gaped. “This is totally unnecessary. I’m just going to get a little pampering done. Nothing more.”
He put his hand out, palm up, again. “Phone.”
I straightened my spine. What in the hell was going on. “No.”
“Then I’ll tell Maddox at the gate to not let you leave.”
