I hated waiting.
This shit was for the birds.
I noticed that as Layla quietly talked to her brother, Dylan looked as if he wasn’t paying attention to her. But I knew better. That silent fucker heard everything his sister was saying. Could probably recite everything word for word. To everyone around him, he looked uninterested, but I knew better. I also knew he was focused on something else. Or should I say, someone?
The one person who hadn’t budged.
The one person who kept her nose in her computer typing away furiously.
Narrowing my eyes, I cleared my throat to get Dylan’s attention. When his eyes shifted towards mine, I smirked, jerking my head lightly towards Phantom. The brooding beast scowled, narrowed his eyes, then nodded at something his sister said, ignoring me altogether.
Fucker was blowing me off.
I knew Phantom would tell me if she had an issue with Dylan. Fuck. She had a problem with everyone, including me, especially when her anger was directed at me. The woman was not nice about it either.
Still, I watched Dylan. I caught him a few times staring at her, scowling. I needed everyone on the same page if we were all going to survive this coming war. I couldn’t have two of my members fighting. I was going to have to take care of this one personally. I didn’t know what bug crawled up his ass, but I was going to have to remove it. I needed him focused and alert. If he had a problem with Phantom, I needed to know what it was.
A phone ringing stopped my thoughts as I leaned forward in my chair.
This was it.
Nodding to Phantom, she connected the call.
“You wanted my attention. Now you’ve got it.”
Smirking, I simply replied. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Don’t play coy with me, asshole. I know you have her.”
“Have who?”
“Your daughter.”
Leaning back in my chair, I grinned. “Well, it’s nice to know you’ve finally admitted the sex of my kid. Only took nine fucking years.”
“I warned you Max. Now you will understand.”
“Understand what. You are a sick mother fucker, who uses a kid to get what you want. I’m done playing these games with you, Goldman. Yeah, that’s right, mother fucker. I know who you are. Your hold over the Skulls is over. You want to come at me, bring it. I’ll be ready for you.”
“Have it your way. I warned you.” The man said before the line went dead.
“Fuck!” Phantom growled. “He knew we were tracing the call. He hung up before I could get his exact location.”
“Hang on, Ms. Phantom,” Sypher said, clicking away on his computer. “I have a general lo... Oh, shit...”
“What?” I growled, looking at the kid as Sypher stared blankly at his computer, almost as if he were too afraid to move. His face paled as he slowly shook his head. I knew that look. It was one I was familiar with when something unexpected was about to happen. Something horrible.
“What!”
Sypher gulped. His pale, scared face slowly turned towards the screen before his feed vanished.
Matrix cursed.
Something in the way Matrix tensed had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. My heart beat so fast it felt like it was about to shoot right out of my chest, as his face paled. “Reaper.”
“Get out of there, NOW!” Dylan shouted, standing up as did several of the others. Massacre already had his phone in his hand, calling someone, when Matrix’s signal also broke, as his screen went black.
Nobody moved.
