“I’m used to eating and drinking surrounded by men. I tend to do most things like they do, including eating. Also, if I didn’t finish quick, they would ask if I was eating it.”
She looked a bit shocked she’d shared that information with him.
“What is it you do in the air force, Quinn?” Jack asked the question they all wanted an answer to.
“I’m a pilot.” She said the words into her mug.
There was about a heartbeat of silence before Joe said, “Holy shit, no way. That’s amazing. Go you.”
“It’s not really. Women fly planes all over the world.”
“Sure, but I’ve never met one,” Joe added.
“We need details, because that is so cool,” Jack said. “What are you flying?”
“Would you have thought it was cool if she’d have been a man?” Piper demanded.
Jack frowned and then placed his hands over Benji’s ears. “Don’t start that crap with me, I would be an idiot to believe that women couldn’t fly planes and well. So back it up, Pip. I’ve just never met a woman air force pilot before.”
“Whatever,” Piper said.
“What do you fly, Quinn?” Luke asked her.
Quinn’s eyes came to his and then away again.
“Planes.” She had a small smile on her face.
“Which ones?”
“They have wings and engines.” She gulped the rest of her coffee, then got off the stool. “Nice seeing you all again. I need to head back to Dad.”
The Trainers watched her leave.
“She must have burnt the inside of her mouth on that coffee, she drank it so fast.” Jack looked thoughtful.
“Why do you think she didn’t want to talk about what she flew?” Joe asked. “Or was she just generally uncomfortable because she was seated beside the stud muffin?”
“What?” Luke dragged his eyes from the door that Quinn had just walked through.
“I reckon there is a spark in the air,” Jack said.
“What?”
“You and her. Felt a bit of tension in the air. And at the movie night, you and Quinn were sitting real close.”
“Fuck off.” Luke scowled. “There is absolutely no spark or anything between us. How could there be? She’s only been in town a few days.”
“When you know, you know,” Piper said, looking smug.
“Know what?” Luke asked.
“When you’ve met someone who interests you.”
