“Because?”

“I’m old, Mac’s old; why can’t we just carry on as we are?”

“Living in sin? Shame on you, Mom. What will people say?”

She slapped him with her bag. “I just don’t need all the fuss.”

“Mac wants to sing his love for you from the rooftops, and to do that he wants to do this.”

She harrumphed. “I’ve told him of my feelings.”

“We make compromises for the people we love.”

She sighed. “I don’t like to make a scene.”

“Really? Is this a new thing? Because you were protesting with a placard when I arrived back in town.”

“Very amusing, but you know what I mean.”

“I’ll tell you something, Mom. I see a man who loves you so much he’s willing to make a commitment. I also see a woman who loves him just as much back who’s scared to do the same.”

She sighed again. “Oh, very well,” she muttered. “They’ll soon move on to the next topic of gossip in town anyway.”

“Are you happy, Mom?”

He saw the small knowing smile tug at her lips. “Mac understands me, Ryan. Not many do.”

Amen,he thought silently.

He doubted he’d get more from her than that, but Ryan decided it was enough. His mother would not commit to anyone without a great deal of thought.

“Me and Hope are happy for you.” He leaned down to kiss her cheek.

“As I am for you with Faith. She’ll keep you on your toes.”

“That she will.” It was his turn to smile.

They entered the room full of their people, and he felt it again, that warmth that filled up some of his heart. This was his place.

Looking at the woman standing beside Hope, he felt that jolt of need.My girl, he thought. Smiling, he went to join her.

He was finally home.
