I hope he does, but knowing Lydia, whatever happens to him wouldn't be harsh enough.
Forty-five minutes later,we're boarding our plane.
Our parents have concluded that Dean and Sadie having sex is in fact just a rumor and that we shouldn't ruin our friendship over a rumor.
Since we're going to be under the same roof for the next two weeks, they tell us that we better change our behavior and apologize, so they make Spencer switch seats, which she does happily, and unfortunately for me, Dean is the one filling her seat.
My parents aren’t too happy about me lying and saying that Sadie was pregnant and gave Dean an STD, but it is too late to cancel our trip, so even though I don’t want to go anymore, they are forcing me to, which is against my rights.
Luckily, I got the window seat.
I'm sitting beside the window, staring out at the tarmac, while Dean is sitting beside me silently, but I feel his eyes on me.
"Our moms say that we have to make up so we're not miserable the entire trip." He breaks the silence. I remain mute. "Come on, Cam. Talk to me, please. You didn't even let me explain my side. Nothing happened between us." He is pissing me off now. Why can't he ever take a hint? I don't want anything to do with him ever again, and he's too stupid to understand.
Well, actually, Dean isn't stupid, but he is being a little bitch right now.
Finally, I look over at him with a scowl.
I wish looks could kill.
"I saw you two with my own eyes."
"You saw Sadie pull me on top of her and kiss me. I didn't kiss her back, and I was already pulling away when you came in the room."
"I don't believe you."
"You know what, that's your problem. You believe only what you want to believe and are so quick to get angry with me and believe the rumors," he snaps. "Have I ever lied to you, Cam? Ever?" My scowl fades into a frown.
He's right. He's never lied to me ever. Even when the truth hurts, he's always been completely honest with me. "Answer me. Have I ever lied to you?" he demands an answer, so I shake my head.
"Exactly. I always tell you the truth, and I'm telling you the truth now. I never had sex with Sadie, and I'd never do that to you. I'm serious when I tell you that when the time comes, I only want you." Stupid Dean and his stupid way of smooth-talking me into forgiveness.
But what if he is telling the truth? If Sadie is lying about sleeping with him—and maybe she is—that means I wasted two weeks ignoring and hating him for no reason. Dean is right. He doesn’t lie to me. So why would he start now?
Stupid freaking Sadie.
I'm still angry, but until we return home, and I can investigate further, I'll forgive him to please our parents and enjoy our trip. "Okay, I forgive you."
"There's nothing to forgive me for. I didn't do anything wrong." He sighs. "Next time, don't be so quick to believe rumors. You're going to high school now, where you'll hear rumors every day. If you hear something that upsets you, then talk to me. Don't run away from me." I nod as he reaches over to take my hand in his. "Jealousy and insecurity isn't a good look for you."
He intertwines our fingers together. "My little spitfire, always pissing me off," he mumbles under his breath, but not low enough that I'm unable to hear him.
"I promise I'll talk to you first and not assume the worst." I should've known better. I know I'm quick to rush to judgment. I've been told that plenty of times before.
But it's my insecurities that are getting the best of me. We only have a year left together. After the school year ends, Dean will be going away to college, and I worry about what'll happen while he's away. He'll see college girls and will want them instead of a child who's just barely starting high school.
With a sigh, I sit back against my seat and close my eyes.
Life as I know it is about to change. I've been comfortable with things with Dean for too long, and soon, our entire lives will change.
One year, and then he'll be gone.
In one year, I'll lose the person that I've spent nearly every day with since I was eight years old.
"Look at me and smile." He cups my face and pulls me in close. I look at him, and instantly, a smile curls on my lips.
"I love you, Camille. I promise I'd never do anything to hurt you or betray your trust." He seals his promise with a kiss.
